Any reasoning behind your picks? Depp as Thompson is a given, seeing as Depp spent alot of time with him while filming fear and loathing but why the other picks - Crowe as Irwin I don't see, did you pick him just cus they are both aussie [thou technically Crowe is New Zealand]?

Same question for Sands did you pick Murphy just cus he is Irish? - I think Murphy is a great actor but I'm not sure I could see him as Bobby Sands would like to have seen a younger Daniel Day Lewis for that role or Aidan Gillen who played a similar part in Some mothers son along side John Lynch who did play Sands.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has turned into a right good little actor of late, could see him playing Phoneix and even a couple of other names up there.

    Pretty much yep: )

Whether freddie mercury is of the highest order is a matter of opinion - the fact is that acting experience aside both my nominations for that role are among the most gregarious and larger than life types of celebrity around. With the proper acting coaching and direction both could probably make it an interesting film. Come to think of it Robbie williams name could probably go into the hat for that one too.

Russell Crowe to play Steve Irwin?

Russell Crowe wants to play Steve Irwin in a film based on the life of the 'Crocodile Hunter'.

The Oscar-winning Australian actor - who has repeatedly spoken of his affection for friend Steve after he was tragically killed, aged just 44, by a stingray - is in talks with Universal Studios about making a biopic.

Crowe, 42, is desperate to make the movie as he feels it would be a fitting tribute to the wildlife expert's life. advertisement

An insider told In Touch Weekly magazine: "It's not about money for Russell - it's about honouring his friend.

"Steve once told Russell that he wanted him to play him in a movie version of his life."

A public memorial was held for father of two Steve on Wednesday.

His eight-year-old daughter Bindi read out a tribute to her dad and a pre-recorded video message from Crowe was broadcast.

The 'Gladiator' star said: "We've all lost a friend, we've lost a champion, and we're going to take some time to adjust to that."

Other tributes came from Australian Prime Minister John Howard, 'Dances With Wolves' star Kevin Costner and Cameron Diaz.

Australian TV executives are already in talks about releasing a DVD of the memorial service which was attended by 5,000 people.

    http://defamer.com/hollywood/ang-lee/ang-lees-moss+on+theron-action-merely-wishful-thinking-157548.php

Brokeback Mountain producer and frequent Ang Lee collaborator James Schamus set the record straight with USA Today over the recent rumors that the director's next project would be a biopic on the life of singer Dusty Springfield starring Charlize Theron, with Kate Moss as her lesbian lover. It seems the entire thing was a media-concocted fabrication:

"It came from a couple bites on the Internet that collided," says James Schamus, Brokeback producer and longtime Lee collaborator. "It showed up on one of these gossip sites, and Ang and I were like, 'Huh? What?' I'm a Dusty Springfield fan but it's all completely fabricated."
And with one brief and bemused denial, the lip-smacking fantasies of millions of eager straight men ready for their equivalent of Brokeback's seminal Jake-taking scene (perhaps Kate could have played a recording studio after-hours cleaning woman who just happens to wander in while Theron's Dusty is rehearsing, and the two quickly surrender to the forbidden she-goodies at their disposal...but we digress) are snuffed like a gay cowboy's cigarette after a satisfying night of fly-fishing

    Jeff Goldblum

    Dusty Springfield

    Amy Adams

    Hunter S. Thompson

Like Ztoic said Johnny depp is a given

Sacha Baron Cohen - I know he's played mostly comedic roles, but I think he can use them to express the diversity of Freddy Mercury

    Steve Irwin

    Brenden Fraiser or Nathan Fillion

    River Phoenix

    Hugh Hefner

Will add me when I have time after work and had more of a think about it.

    .

just cus he said he wanted to do it doesn't mean he'd be any good. I can't see him as Erwin maybe back when he was doing films like the sum of us but I don't think he could do it now. Yes Depp has said he wants to play Thompson but its different as he has pretty much already played Hunter S. Thompson given that the character in Fear and loathing is him.

So to play a flamboyant gay man the actor should be flamboyant and gay? Wow kind defeats the whole point of someone "acting" doesn't it? Its not my opinion that he was show man of highest order its pretty much a fact - he was always noted for his live performances, inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame, the 58th spot in a list of the "100 Greatest Britons", sponsored by the BBC and voted for by the public and listed at the 52nd spot in a 2007 Japanese national survey of the 100 most "influential heroes" If he hadn't captured peoples attention why is he on this list? Go look at the footage from Live Aid and ask yourself could you see someone like that twit from Big Brother holding an audience the way mercury does.

Blitz - good call on Sacha Baron Cohen. I was trying to think who could pull mercury off and I think Cohen could do it. I was going to say maybe some like Mika as he does have the voice and has been influenced by Mercury but I think Cohen is a better choice.

yes and no - in fear and loathing in las vegas he plays the character of Raoul Duke who is a fictional character but the whole novel is written as a fiction novel while based on real events [Thompson and attorney Oscar Zeta Acosta's trip to vegas] So Duke is pretty much Thompson and Dr. Gonzo is Zeta Acosta.

While getting ready for the part Depp spent alot of time with Thompson and picked up alot of his mannerisms and even burrowed his clothes to wear in the film.

Depp also took care of his funeral event (& wrote the introduction to a posthumous book of his photography)

    Funeral

On August 20, 2005, in a private ceremony, Thompson's ashes were fired from a cannon atop a 153-foot tower of his own design (in the shape of a double-thumbed fist clutching a peyote button) to the tune of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man", known to be the song most respected by the late writer. Red, white, blue, and green fireworks were launched along with his ashes. As the city of Aspen would not allow the cannon to remain for more than a month, the cannon has been dismantled and put into storage until a suitable permanent location can be found. According to widow Anita Thompson, the actor Johnny Depp, a close friend of Thompson (and portrayer of Raoul Duke, Thompson's fictional alter ego, in the movie adaptation of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), financed the funeral. Depp told the Associated Press, "All I'm doing is trying to make sure his last wish comes true. I just want to send my pal out the way he wants to go out."[29]

Other famous attendees at the funeral included U.S. Senator John Kerry and former U.S. Senator George McGovern; 60 Minutes correspondent Ed Bradley; actors Bill Murray (who portrayed Hunter S. Thompson in the movie Where the Buffalo Roam), Sean Penn and Josh Hartnett; singers Lyle Lovett and John Oates, The Poet Trip Lucid; and numerous other friends. An estimated 280 people attended the funeral.

The plans for this monument were initially drawn by Thompson and Ralph Steadman and were shown as part of an Omnibus program on the BBC entitled Fear and Loathing in Gonzovision (1978). It is included as a special feature on the second disc of the 2003 Criterion Collection DVD release of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (labeled on the DVD as "Fear and Loathing on the Road to Hollywood"). The video footage of Steadman and Thompson drawing the plans and outdoor footage showing where he wanted the cannon constructed were played prior to the unveiling of his cannon at the funeral.

Douglas Brinkley, a friend and now the family's spokesman, said of the ceremony: "If that's what he wanted, we'll see if we can pull it off."[30]

    know your subject

    from wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_Mercury
Although he cultivated a very flamboyant stage personality, several sources refer to Mercury as having been very shy in person.[9][11][49] He also granted very few interviews. Mercury once said of himself: "When I'm performing I'm an extrovert, yet inside I'm a completely different man."[4]

You'll need someone who can act to get the transition between extrovert and personal right, It would be a huge risk and not to mention time consuming to get an acting coach to train someone to capture that. It would be best to start with someone who can act at least to start with.

someones a tad defensive - I'd hardly call presenting a clear and backed up argument patronising. If anyone is being patronising here its you cus when someone disagrees with your choices rather then discuss/argue the point you sulk. yes we can all stick to our choices but don't throw a fit just because some people disagree with yours.

Michael Fassbender played Bobby Sands in Hunger

    Kinda OT but
Forest Whitaker is delighted to land the lead role in a new Louis Armstrong biopic after winning the approval of the late star's estate.

The actor will play the legendary jazz musician in the upcoming movie and will also direct the picture.
He says, "Armstrong left a monumental mark on our lives and our culture.
"He lived an amazing life and, through his art, shifted the way music was played and would be heard after him, not just here in the US but all over the world."
Armstrong died of a heart attack in 1971.

RE the Freddie Mercury back and forth.

Has anyone ever seen Goerge Michael's "Somebody to Love" at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert?

It was awesome. Probably on YT.

Not to say that he could play Freddie at all, but he certainly could perform comparably (if not in that same amazing range).

I would pick Edward Norton to play John Lennon in a biopic. The physical and vocal resemblance is uncanny. In that biopic, I would also cast Guy Pearce to play George Martin.

    Sorry for the resurrection but:

Last year there was the announcement that a Queen/Freddie Mercury movie was in development with Peter Morgan set to write and Sacha Baron Cohen signed to play Freddie Mercury. The casting sounded so potentially perfect that I figured the movie would end up dying on the vine, as so many biopics do. But that’s not how this one is going. According to the band, the film is scripted and set to shoot later this year for a 2012 release.
