    Hi folks,

Quick question, if I get my passport renewed do I have to hand back my old passport?

Can I get my passport renewed if it is still valid for another two years?

    Thanks

It will tell you on your application form you can get from your local Libary, but i am 99.9% sure you have to return the old one.

Do you not return it with your application and then have it returned to you with your new passport? Only difference being that the corners will be clip to indicate that it is no londer valid.

That would be perfect if its the case. Can anyone confirm?

    Thanks

You do get your old one back. They clip the corners of the cover and stamp cancelled on a few pages. Imagine them keeping everyone in the country's old passports! And you can get a new one at any time, afaik.

Yeah, this is correct. If you don't return the old one when applying for a new one, they will regard it as having been lost. This is considered a serious offence and will be noted on your file. They may decide not to issue you with a new passport if you have a bad record for losing them - eg 3 passports in 2 years. So, to save having this on your record, just return the old one with your new application. Also, they don't do duplicate passports any more, so if you want to get an extended time on the 2 years on your current passport, it will mean a completely new application.
