TV on a laptop (via internet)

    HI all,

Am looking to buy a new laptop and am finding the specs on a lot of them bewildering (I know how to use, but not to make em!) Was hoping for a bit of info from you guys.

The main reason is, basically, watching TV over the internet. I know this may require speicalist software, but I don't mind that. I'm goign abroad longterm over the summer, and don't want to buy a TV and foreign licence for a year for a 6 month stay.

Budget: Negotiable, trying to keep it under €1000.

Intended use: See above. No games, good screen for watching DVDs.

    Mobility: Not really important.

    Warranty: Negotiable.

Also, is it worth shelling out an extra 200 - 250 for a laptop with a blu-ray DVD player? Is the quality that noticeably different?

    Thanks for your help,

    Poo.

you can get some great laptop's for under 1,000 euro. have a look at dell, but dont upgrade the harddrive or ram with them. they charge 300% more if you do it yourself which is as easy as changing batteries on a remote.

Intended use: See above. No games, good screen for watching DVDs.
if your only going to watch dvd's and not play games then you can save a good bit by buying a laptop with build in graphics.

    Mobility: Not really important.
ive got a huge laptop (dell xps m1710 17") and its very heavy compared to most laptop's. but i bought a backpack to hold my laptop and it makes it very mobile.
all depends on what size you want.

    Warranty: Negotiable.
most will come with 1 year base warranty. they will cover hardware faults etc.
you can upgrade to a max of 3-4 years.
for an extra 200 you can get accidental damage cover.
which means if you drop it or break it yourself from mis-use they will repair it.

Also, is it worth shelling out an extra 200 - 250 for a laptop with a blu-ray DVD player? Is the quality that noticeably different?
in my opinion NO. blue ray's are good quality, but do are dvd's. my advise is to save 200 - 300 quid.

have a look at the inspiron 1720
