    I've decided that I want to be a primary teacher, but its 15 years since I did my leaving, and I don't have honours Irish. Haven't looked at Irish since I left school. Would I be able to cover the course between now and June or will it take me till June 09? Can someone please tell me is on the syllabus also.
    Thanks

    I'd have to say no, not a chance. You've got 16 weeks to learn a 2 year course, and believe me, it's a 2 year course. There is an awful lot of ****e to do for Hons.

    I would say, yeah it's possible, if you were only looking to pass but for Primary Teaching you need a C3 Min as far as I know. You've to put in a fair bit of work to get a C in Irish, there's loads of components to it - Aural, Oral and all the written stuff obviously. You'd have to organise to do the Oral through your local school too I think.

    Basically, it can't be done. BUT, anythings possible if you're willing to work hard enough, so the advice I would give is to go ahead and do the Irish Hons exam this year (It'll cost ~€200 I think, not sure though) but don't expect anything out of it. Use it as a practise and concentrate your efforts towards the exam in 2009, next year. You should be well prepared for it.

    You could try and do it, but you'd need to be doing upwards of 4 hours Irish per day, you'd need a teacher to check out everything and point you in the right direction etc.

    Maybe. :)

    You seem to have forgotten a few somewhat important points;
    1. The OP hasn't done Irish in quite some time
    2. They are aiming for a C3 minimum. Its a high target.
    3. They'll have no tuition bar they solicit grinds off a teacher.
    4. Its a 2 year course for a reason. If you could attain a C3 in Hons Irish with just 16 weeks work, you'd imagine the numbers doing Hons Irish would be significantly higher than they are.

    It's a 2 year course because they expect you to be doing it in a classroom situation, with 6 or 7 other subjects. If it was the only subject you did, you'd get it done a lot faster.

    Doing the actual literature etc. doesn't take THAT long (except for the úrscéal, that'd take a while), I think the greatest barrier would be regaining the necessary standard. They expect a very high standard for honours, and if the OP didn't get an honour in the LC in the first place, then I imagine 15 years of neglect haven't done that standard any good.

    My gut says no but it all depends on two things really, how good is your Gaeilge now & how determined are you? Plus...have you actually signed up to sit the exam yet? The Scrd Béil isn't long away...

    Whether you can complete the course in 4 months or is not really going to be the deciding factor. To sit HL Irish you will have to register as an external candidate and externals have to register with the Dept by February 1st, so you will have to wait until June 09 anyway. It will probably give you a better chance to do well.

    Hibernia course was also mentioned - it still requires the C3 at higher level or the Diploma in Irish offered by NUIG

    I think the course is changing after this year anyway, so you're proberly better off to wait until next year in any case... (not 100% posotive on that, heard it mentioned though).. Best of luck!!

    If you're fluent in Irish, the course could easily be done in 16 weeks.

    If you haven't a word of Irish, and it seems like you don't, it's going to be pretty damn tough.
