So this Rover P5b has sat in a garage on axles stands since 1976, having only been used for one day during all that time. It has been in the one family since new and is believed to be either 1968 or 1969.

It is the desirable "Coupe" version with only 74,000 miles and has auto transmission and still has its original handbook and tools and off course it has a lovely old original Irish reg number !

It is totally original, never damaged, painted or welded and retains all its original parts and nothing is missing !

Amazing. I'd imagine there will be a nice bit of work to get it going again. Engine, electrics, brakes, suspension bushes etc.

Wow! MercMad, are you selling it on behalf of the owner? Or do you just know where it is? Have you any idea how much it is selling for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

I was asked whether I would be interested, and the owner is a friend of a very good friend of mine so I have to thread carefully since it will need a lot of time and money just to get it operational again, let alone have it looking respectable.

There is some very minor rust and pitting to the chrome, but its all original so if it good clean up well without requiring bodywork then it would be worth doing. I dont mind the mechanical work at all, and the interior wont need anything more than a few hours with some quality products.

You would have to balance that with the cost of buying a respectable looking fully operational one in the first place.

Either way I have first shout on it and I'll be doing some homework and making him an offer. Thing is this couldn't have come at a worse time for me, two old cars already disassembled in the garage, and a house move on the way ! I've known of this car's existance for about 15 years............and it come's along right now !!

If I decide against it I'll pst up more details, either way I'm going back for more photos !

    that just reminded me !

I saw one of these for sale sitting on a side street just near Portobello college a week or so ago, here are the contact details as i took a photo with my phone,

    1972 P5B coupe
    086 825 6812

it was too dark to get one of the car itself unfortuntately.

Can't really comment on the condition as i didn't really stop, looked okay i guess.

Actually just so folk know the colour is actually two tone, solid grey with a chocolate brown rood. Interior is I suppose a "heritage" brown/tan colour !

I'll post some better photos of it when I can!

Thanks MercMad, looks like it could be a worthwhile project. I'm not in a position myself right now but it would be great to see this back to it's former glory. A real life "barn find". If you decide to go ahead, I wish you the very best of luck!

Nice to see cars like this can still be found in that kind of condition, particularly an original irish one, best of luck with it:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

Yes the coincedence was rather alarming since another forum member had lent me two books "The Cobra in the Barn" and "The Hemi in the Barn" and my thoughts had been on the whole "I wonder if that would ever happen to me" thing when I got a phonecall out of the blue !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 959 ✭✭✭manta mad

now i wonder if i were to get me hands on those two books would the same

( barn find ) thing happen to me :)

Yep,theres been many the 3.5 coupe banger raced over the years, they are apparently hard to find in england also, im sure theres someone out there that would bite your arm off to get hold of it, especially with the irish reg and all.

    ........its a 3.5 !

Once the owner decides how much he wants for it that'll determine its fate !

There's an article about this model in one of the classic car mags this month, don't remember which one though sorry.

The tag line was if you fancy a rolls without the running costs get one of these !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

I know there is a feature in Classic Cars which shows an SM, a 220SEb and a Citroen SM, and compares them all !

I was wondering why they chose a 220SE instead of a later car either a 2.8 or 3.5 which would have matched the other two more closely !

    Anyway..........

    IK- 1970?
I think all the P5B coupes were 3.5V8. The 'B' stood for Buick!

As the op says one owner car totally original and he's trying to save it now! Nice find op I hope the term barn find doesn't send the asking price into bonhoms territory.

The car was purchased shortly after I commented originally. It was repainted and cleaned up and looked very well indeed. I believe it has sat outdoors unfortunately and I am not completely sure of its present condition, though I do know of its whereabouts. The current owner has a few classics, all Irish reg so I am sure he knows what he has.

    @ John Larkin...yes that's the reg !
