hi i just got a desktop pc and it had no harddrive so i installed a new sata harddrive in it and fresh install of windows xp professional, everything seemed to go smoothly.

until i clicked on internet explorer and no joy at all connecting to the net.i am on digiweb with router connection.

when i go to my network connections theres 2 connections there 1394 connection 2 and 1394 connection, what i,m wondering is how come i don,t have a local area connection in there?

i disabled one of the 1394 connections and still nothing, theres nothing at all no ip address no subnet mask details.

would really appreciate some help on this guys as i,m near to pulling me hair out

    Ya you need them.

    Download this onto your laptop.
    http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-143.zip

That will tell you what motherboard you have , from there then you can go get the drivers from their site.

Can you do a screenshot of the device manager and expand any folder with an exclamation or Question mark, were particularly interested in the Network Adapter section, actually if your using the laptop then a screenshot isnt possible so tell us the names of all the things with a ? beside it?

On XP Pro to get to device manager right click on My Computer, choose properties then click on the hardware TAB and then device manager

It may be that your driver isnt installed in which case the disc that came with your pc should have something on the lines of a driver utilities disc or something similar.

Yeah you need to do as blackgold>> said, identify the chipset manufacturer and then go to the site (intel, etc) and download the driver set, should be set after that.

    Nice choice of board :)

    http://support.asus.com/download/download_item.aspx?product=1&model=A8N-SLI&SLanguage=en-us

    You only need these .

nVidia Chipset (run the setup.exe in the folder called winxp)
    http://dlsvr02.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/utils/nvidia/Chipset_WINXP32_V665.zip

    Audio driver http://dlsvr02.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/audio/ALC850/ALC850_64bit_5781.zip

And run this when you got the chipset and audio installed.

    asus update program
    http://dlsvr02.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/flash/AsusUpdt_V70602.zip

    Goodluck
