And, as an officer of said union, what would my duties entail?

    Thanks for any responses.

Grow your hair long, stop showering, pick up a copy of Marx and Nietzsche and start picketing random petrol stations and caring obsessively about the best possible way to waste lots of university money and time whilst simultaneously looking like a tosser in local newspapers. Also, ensure to tell everyone you know that Nestle bad, whale hunting is evil and the Peace Corps are calling you every day.

Talk to some of the existing officers. As a first step, I'd suggest running as a class rep and attending some CRC meetings. This will give you a taste of the politics involved. You'll probably have to wait for the next academic year to become your Class Rep.

The SU elections are usually in March.

Student politics is a joke. Its actually a scourge to the world. I hate student politics. My God. When I was in Uni they picketed the whole college over carparking places, caused huge tailbacks and traffic jams for everyone, because douchebags were complaining about payin a euro to park their car safely. SU's vary between retarded heavy handed demonstrations, ridiculous bureaucracy and infighting, splitting into separate factions, pushing private agendas that dont benefit the student population as a whole and ruining every rag week. It's a farce, and the fact that those ahead are actually seen as quotable sources by local and national media on issues effecting young people is just an insult to all the young people who aren't idealistic liberal douchebags with a chip on their shoulders about every major corporation, sellafield, GM foods and Nestle.

It wasn't like that when I was in Galway. It hasn't been like that in Galway for years! Granted we had parking issues but that was more serious than paying a euro - it was about getting somewhere to park in the first place! We didn't entertain most of the other stuff you've listed so your experience isn't exactly reflective of the union in Galway...

What a great job you did with the parking by the way. Kudos to you.
