Losing Network Connection

    Hi there,

I'm having a problem with my network connection for a while now. When i go to start > run > cmd > ipconfig i only get Windows IP Configuration where i should read my ip address etc. I go into control panel > network connections and theres nothing there, blank. This should obviously not be the case.

I have lost this before and did a system restore and that seemed to resolve it but having tried it this time (several restore points) it has not worked.

I have an eircom broadband router and the problematic PC is connected via cable to the NIC. And a laptop (typing on it now) connected via wireless so its not the router/broadband. The NIC seems to be fine, updated drivers etc. and nothing suggests its that.

I have deleted temp, disk cleanup, defrag, chkdsk /f, reboot ... still the same. Its doing my head in now. How do i restore my connection? Any ideas?

Did you try adding your IP details statically?.

If your broadband routers address is 192.168.1.254...

Try manually inserting your IP details on your pc like the following...

Ip Address (Any address 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.253)

    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Default gateway: 192.168.1.254 (Address of your router)

I'll be honest, i would normally got to Control Panel > Network Connections > right click on Local Area Connection (or what ever its called) and configure that way, but its completely blank now. As if no connection exists at all.

Is the network card listed in device manager?

Press "Windows Key" & "Break" - Select Hardware Tab, Device Manager and expand Network Adaptors.

In device manager, network adapters is hidden, so i unhide it and network adapters are fine (not yellow exclamations marks) and its working properly etc. (updated drivers earlier, after rolling back) Its all fine. (I do have an issue with i386p in Non plug and play adapters, but dont think thats related)

Its all good for the NIC from what i can see.

Perhaps a windows service is disabled?

Perhaps a windows service is disabled?

Which one though? How should i go about checking which one?

Also i can't understand why my LAN connection disappears, i do a restore to previous point and sometimes its back again? Its not as if it has a problem and the icon is gray and has a red x on it. It disappears all together.

Start -> Run -> services.msc -> Look for DHCP Client and make sure its enabled and status is running.

Then Start -> Run -> cmd

Type in 'netsh int ip reset reset.txt' (eircom broadband connection)

Reboot and wait for it to sync on the router .... job done !!
