Yamaha Dragstar 250CC

Alright, I have had the Dragstar for two years now, from new. She has only 4500 miles on the clock. However my probation period is now up, and I am free to ride any bike I choose. I was thinking of going for a Yamaha R6, althought I have doubts. The riding position is totally different, obviously the speed and overall power of the R6 is massively different. Any Thoughs, should I make the move. Would it be a safe option?

Go to a bike shop and take one for a test ride.

The type of bike (cruiser/sports/touring/enduro etc) you ride is a complete personal choice.

There are big cruisers if you like the cruiser driving style and position.

I also started off on a 250 Dragstar - recently upgraded
to a Virago 535. The Dragstar is very easy to control and
quite light so changing to anything else takes a bit of
    getting used to...

There is no doubt that the Dragstar is an easy bike to ride. As for the riding position I have never ridden a sports bike, so the test ride would be a good idea.:) It was more the power aspect I was concerned with. No point in me getting a big bike and then losing control doing something stupid. With the 250 I know the limits, I would imagine that there is a lot more trouble on the roads when stretching a 600cc sports bike.

Maybe a sports tourer? Honda VFR perhaps. A sports tourer will have a slightly more comfortable riding position and will still move when you want it too.

Good option. I was thinking the whole lying over the tank think is probably not for me. I am heading out to bikeworld at the weekend to have a look around.

Try out the sitting position. I'd go sports tourer too. Watch the power difference too. I'd be more inclined to go with something a bit tamer/easy to handle for a while. An SV bandit etc will have loads of power compared to the dragstar and won't spit you off quite as easily. I went for a SV after the restriction finished and found it more than enough for a long time. R6 has lots of power but is peaky and very light/cramped. I'd say realisticly 70/80BHP is prob enough for most and they still do over 180KM/H and crazy acceleration compared to the dragstar. Watch you don't spin the back wheel with the extra power. Scared the s**t out of me first time it happened when already in second or third gear.

Yeah, I'll have a look at the SV.

If looking at SV/Vstrom also look at TDMs.

I'll have a look at that as well. Here, what is wrong with bike world?

I think KTRIC put it best:

"They have a big barrel inside the door and they make you bend over it when you come in. Then the sales staff wallet rape you "
