my budget is €4000. I want a car between a 1 and a 1.2 litre. nothing fancy, just something reliable.

    can't find much on carzone....

What would be the best make of car to buy ??

Yaris. no contest. when you're finished with it you can get back nearly all you paid for it. motor tax is v.cheap, they will generally have dual airbags and power steering - just avoid anything with black unpainted door handles as a rule of thumb.

Plenty on Carzone, as I said, avoid black door handles!

    Not much on Carzone?

There is over a thousand cars with that criteria, 32 in Tipperary alone.

Why is that? You mean get one with color coded door handles?

the unpainted handled models usually don't have power steering or leccie windows be they UK "S" models or Irish "E" models.

treat the Terra model as your minimum. central locking, electric windows, power steering and dual airbags are on this model.

The only thing I've ever seen to need work on high mileage Yaris's is the water pump. you'll hear it rattle as you rev the engine up. this is only really a problem on some high milers. make sure the stereo works too!

Ford Fiesta, you really cannot beat the spec on the run out old model:

Alloy wheels, air conditioning, cd player all standard on the Ghia spec. 1.25 litre engine is a cracking little unit, while that model Fiesta is not as fresh as the Yaris you are getting a better equipped and newer car. Still alot of car for your money.

the Fiesta may be high spec bazz, and to be fair they're a cracking little car to drive, but from a cost of ownership point of view, it doesn't beat the Yaris.
From a safety viewpoint, the Fiesta doesn't do too well as it's based on a 1996 model, which itself is based on it's 80's predecessor:

compare that with the Yaris's 4 stars (same as an 08 Fiesta)

and of that 32 in Tipperary, none of them really stick out. I don't want to be spending money on something I'm not happy with. I'm just really trying to gather info on what would be the best model to buy e'g. a yaris, or a fiesta. and what models to avoid e.g. punto?? ????

a very nice car and I'm starting to lean towards the Fiesta.

I was talking to a garage owner the other day, he told me to stay away from any corsa over a 1997 as it's a piece of ****e!!!. before this a corsa would have been my car of choice.

IS THERE ANY OTHER MODELS I SHOULD AVOID??

thanks for the replies so far
