I am trying to arrange a trip to Amsterdam for the bf's birthday and need a bit of advice on where to stay.

I suppose we will need a hotel that is near enough to everything and also short walking distance as I cannot walk far when intoxicated !

    Any suggestions?

I stayed at The Apple Inn a few years ago. Cheap but clean, friendly staff and reasonable breakfast. Fairly close to centre.

Check out this hotel. Stayed here and loved it. Ask for a room overlooking the canal.

NH City centre. about 2 min walk from Dam Square. Central to everything.Ive been to the Dam 4 or 5 times and thats where I always stay. Very convenient for everything.

What’s your budget? That’s this biggest determinant of hotel recommendation

The RHO is central and cheap (ish). The Golden Tulip chain have several nice hotels in the city. I can recommend the “Golden Tulip Amsterdam Centre”

The American Hotel is excellent, right in the heart of the main square in Amsterdam. Can be pricey - but great hotel....

+1 for the amsterdam american... great location, nice hotel. 2 min walk to a lively square with lots of restaurants etc... trams and taxis a-plenty nearby.... You can get breakfast there for something like €20pp but just go out to a cafe instead, much cheaper and better unless you're lazy ;)

I stayed in the NH Doelen Hotel in Amsterdam, the same hotel group as Collie1 recommended, but different hotel. Again very central, but this hotel is on the Amstel river, and we were in a room overlooking the canal with a balcony, very romantic, and it's a nice hotel. Although I think they've just a few on these balcony rooms so you'd have to request one.
