I went out and bought an SB400 last night.
Came home popped it on the D40 but it doesn't seem to be working.

Can anyone give me the idiot's guide to using the SB400?
I thought it was plug and play but maybe it's not.

If I don't hear back I'll just head back to the shop and see if they know what's wrong but I can't do that til tonight.

    Cheers,

    Killian

Not trying to be funny but you did put in the batteries right?

    The batteries are in properly.
    I tried two different sets.
The flash turns on and the ready light is active.

Does your camera work with the pop up flash?

Maybe you have it in the "auto - flash forced off" mode?

You've locked the flash in position when you inserted it into the hotshoe?

sound's like you have a bad flash. I bought a camera a few years ago and the shop threw in a faulty flash for free, said maybe i could get it fixed.
It was exactly as you describe there, i opened it up and there was a broken solder on one of the wires from the electronics to the actual flash bulb, i soldered it and it worked perfect. But I got that for free, you didnt, bring it back and change it.

    Yeah, the built-in flash works.

I've tried the camera in every mode, still no joy.

The flash is locked into the hotshoe.

That's what I will be doing tonight unless some points out something really stupid that I'm not doing. :)

Sounds like you got a bad flash then - nothing else off the top of my head I can think of.

Does the SB-400 have a test button you can press to test the flash tube?

No test button that I can see.

    Thanks for the help.

I'll head back to the shop this evening.

Thanks for the help earlier folks.

I went back to the shop, they took a quick couldn't get it to fire.
Popped in a different one, it worked right away and I left with the replacement.
