Season 5 Casting News [SPOILERS]

"Stargate Atlantis" begins shooting its fifth season soon, and with it comes the addition of a new castmember and an important milestone.

The People's Choice Award winner will begin production later in February for its new 20-episode season that will include the series' benchmark 100th episode, it was announced Tuesday, Feb. 5.

Also, actor Robert Picardo, who has appeared as International Oversight Committee rep Richard Wooley on previous episodes will officially join the "Atlantis" cast this season as he takes command of the Atlantis expedition. The team of military and civilian explorers use the Ancients-created Stargate to travel to the Pegasus galaxy in order to find other technologies left behind the Ancients.

In this pivotal season, change is the watchword. Friends are lost and made, while alliances are forged and new alien races are discovered. Wooley's unique leadership style requires a bit of an adjustment for the team led by Lt. Colonel Sheppard (Joe Flanigan) and including Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett), Teyla (Rachel Luttrell), Ronon (Jason Momoa) and Dr. Jennifer Keller (Jewel Staite).

As previously announced, the characters Col. Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping), Dr. Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) and the late Dr. Carson Beckett (Paul McGillion) will return for a handful of episodes apiece as guest stars this upcoming season."

Agreed - thread title change accordingly.

Wolsey in charge makes more sense than having had Carter in charge. Atlantis was originally not under military jurisdiction (hence Weir) and it makes more sense to continue in this vein. Wolsey has been digging his nose in a fair bit and has at least formed partial relationships with the team.

Yeah Carter is halfway through the season (more so in fact) and has had no impact on the show at all. Such a shame.

I had a nerdgasm! I love Picardo! and his character wolsey, while a little stiff has proven to be a great character, and i really look forward to his character developing into one that we'll love, now lets try and get it right this time producers, Atlantis can try and keep the same cast members for more than a season perhaps?

I think it makes sence that its him because he is a member of the IOA and they would want one of their own in command, also i think he is a great actor, and a decent charactor but he was not as good a "bad guy" as Maybourne or Q (cant remember his SG name)

I'm happy to give the change a shot but I hate Woolseys transition.
Seriously, anyone, watch 'Heroes' again and tell me that they didn't make a bollocks of Woolsey.

Me thinks he meant the SG1 double episode 'Heroes'. Good episodes too. I need to watch it again, don't remember Wolsey's part in it. Just the interviews and that annoying film maker and Janet

Rather like Woolsy, hes an interesting chap and indeed, very logical person to take over.

But Dr, Keller on the team? not too sure about that, think shes an OK actor and was very good in firefly, but with the her and Ronan thing I can see them going a bit soppy. Will have to see how that one pans out.

How can a thread about a season that doesn't exist yet contain anything but spoilers?

Agreed on Woolsey though. I like his character in a an occasional supporting role but leading Atlantis? Sounds like the producers are going into maintenance mode and just reusing old material rather than trying a new character type, that never turns out well.

i dont know i loved Jewle in FF but have not been wowed by her a character in SGA, hopefully as a full time role she will be a better character and will as an actor have more of a chance to get into her role.

Beware of minor SPOILERS for the Season Five premiere, "Search and Rescue," in the report below.

Actor Robert Picardo will appear in 14 of 20 episodes in the upcoming fifth season of Stargate Atlantis, according to executive producer Joseph Mallozzi (blog).

Picardo joins the show's regular cast as Richard Woolsey, the role he has played on both Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis in numerous guest appearances over the last four years (story). Woolsey first appeared in the SG-1 Season Seven episode "Heroes, Part 2."

Woolsey takes over as the commander of the Atlantis expedition, after the departure of Colonel Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) early in Season Five. With his brash personality, loyalties to the I.O.A., and questionable command decisions ("The Seer"), it will no doubt be a challenge for Colonel Sheppard and his team to adjust to their new leader.

It is not yet known which episode will be Picardo's first as a regular cast member, but it is probably not the season premiere -- "Search and Rescue," which guest stars Tapping and will lead up to her character's departure.

It's not really the same. Spoiler tags block out the text between them so that you have to highlight the text to read it. It makes it harder to accidentally see something you don't want to.

afaik, Carson Beckett is confirmed back for at least 2 episodes. Woolsey will appear in 16 - 2 more than carter this season. That sly dog.

Dunno how they're getting Carson back in, don't want to know It'll be cool to see him whenever he pops up. I always liked his character. I've always liked Picardo since I saw him as the emh in voyager. The way this season has picked up and this casting news i'm really looking forward to season 5.

I agree about Carson he was a good strong team member.Theyre not giving too much away about his return but can't wait anyway.

As for Robert Picardo I enjoyed him in Voyager too and hes a great science fiction actor.I cant imagine him going on off-world missions in Pegasus since he hardly ever went off-world in SG-1

I would have loved to see Woolsey return as leader...had he retained his hard nosed attitude from season 7 of SG-1.
