so this is the deal right?

you gotta pay for the software upgrades on itunes?

failing that you have the option to jailbreak (which is risky) or use those crappy web applications?

Is that the situation? Where did people find the jailbreak?

Pay for the upgrade, yes. The applications already exist on the iPod (in 1.1.3) but need to be activated (along with the jiggly icons). To get the 1.1.3 Jailbroken you must downgrade to 1.1.1.

The Jailbreak risky? Not in the slightest with the iPod Touch, you can always restore with no worries. Now Jailbreak can be risky on the iPhone but that's because of the software unlocking (don't want to risk that).

People study the device, the first Jailbreak was installed by crashing Safari with the TIFF exploit (Safari crashed when subjected to TIFF images, so once it did - it made a loophole and Jailbreak would install).

The other versions are easiest done by upgrading while already Jailbroken (1.1.1 to 1.1.2 or 1.1.1 to 1.1.3). The latest Firmware can be broken without the need for a computer, all you need is a Wi-Fi connection and a Jailbroken device in either 1.1.1 or 1.1.2

    http://jailbreakme.com (for 1.1.1)

    http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/site/112jb.html (for 1.1.2)

    http://ijailbreak.com/ (for 1.1.3)

correct me if i'm wrong, but if you've never jailbroken your ipod, and you upgrade to 1.1.3, then you can no longer downgrade to jailbreak? is that right?

i upgraded to 1.1.3 when i got mine, and now it wont let me downgrade to jailbreak it.

(this aside from the fact that my main dektop pc refuses to acknowledge the ipod at all, as per my thread below)

you can downgrade but it's a bit tricky. If you're any good at computers though it's fairly straight forward. Watch this video if you wanna try it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YakjwxB3nQU

But the only problem i've had so far is that jailbroken 1.1.3 is a bit unstable at the moment, if your worried, stay at 1.1.2 jailbroken has it probably has more support now and is far more stable.

again which firmware are you on? You just need to add a specific source to your installer sources.
    For 1.1.3 add http://ipodtouchmaster.com/files/repo.xml
    For 1.1.2 watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKp4vuCzpcg

You can't until the 2.0 update comes out in July.

You can buy the iPhone apps (Mail, Weather, Stocks, Notes, Maps) but other than that any apps that you want will have to be gotten through jailbreaking or waiting til the App Store is launched in June as aidan_walsh said.
