Apple Inc. unveiled models of its iPhone mobile handset and iPod media player with double the memory of previous versions.
The iPhone will now be available in a 16-gigbyte model for
$499 and the iPod Touch in a $499, 32-gigabyte edition, the Cupertino, California-based company said today in a PR Newswire

How long before they double them again?

And they'll cost 500 here right? damn-a-lam, I find it hard to justify that price...

I already sold my ipod touch 16gb 2months ago, I think I'm going to hold out for another year until I buy another... 32gb is not enough for me....

No sign of the 32GB iPod on the Irish Apple website. Don't you just hate it when you buy an Apple product and then within a few months they release a better version of it.

it's up on the main page of the irish site but not in the store yet. Anyone else feel like they've been kicked in the face by Apple, I paid €399 in October for a 16GB and now i could buy a 32GB with an upgrade software package for (probably) €449. They could atleast offer the upgrad free for early adopters......oh well, my jailbreak will have to do!

I wouldnt worry really - chances are there will be several more changes by the time xmas 2008 comes around. Apple have had a smacking in the stock market recently and there is some talk out there that they are puting these out so quickly to boost sales and keep investors happy (never mind the consumers who have purchased already)

    Roll on the 160gb iphone!

$500 (€340~)is nothing for a 32gig ipod touch when you price up a 32gig solid state drive.

the 32gig ipod touch is one to buy in america i think.

i'm a tad annoyed at the iphone getting 16gigs, i just bought one there last month.

yeah well if you put it in comparison to the 64GB SSD on the Macbook Air which i think is something like €800 extra it really isn't that much!

I was debating on whether to wait for a 64GB iPod or get the 32GB but if it will be quite expensive I think I will get the 32GB. Why can't they just use HDD. They are cheper and bigger in storage.

they are bulkier, draw more power, slower, one tiny bump could mean bye bye nice $500 device.

solid state solves all those issues above, plus they are great for jogging as they are pretty much shock proof within reason like don't go putting your ipod touch in a paint mixer and come crying said "cremo said it's shock proof" when (or if :D) it doesn't work.

I don't really mind if it was bigger. I love my old 80GB iPod and if it was that fat I wouldn't mind. I don't think a HDD would make the iPod much slower.

Unless you compare that price with other 32gb flash devices such as the Creative ZEN or Sansa View.... could the ipod touch be cheaper? certainly...is the price OTT? definitely... it will cost between €450 and €500 here.... which is quite ridiculous.

Also, regarding HDD, considering the ipod classic uses 1.8" it's highly highly highly unlikely a tiny bump would break the HDD, really and truly it would take quite a large shock to break it (certainly enough of a shock to break the ipod touch's glass screen)

Does anyone know what the code/serial number for the 1.1.3 touch is? I don't think I trust sales assistants to tell me its the latest software!

Also is there any easy way on jailbreaking a 1.1.3 touch? As in for a less technical person!!

    Thanks

there's no easy way to jailbreak if it's on 1.1.3, if you really want to jailbreak you'd be better off hoping the one you buy is 1.1.2 as it's easier to work around. As far as the serial number i have no clue but if they say it has the newest firmware then i'm sure it will.

I'm not too bothered about jailbreaking so I can easily wait until an easy method comes out.

I do want 1.1.3 though because I want the new apps pre installed. I wouldn't be so sure about the sales assistants as I doubt they are even aware that it can have different firmwares!!

I had a look round and from what I can tell the 3rd digit of s/n should be 8 for 2008 and the 4th and 5th represent the week of manufacture so I suppose its just a case of finding the newest I can!
