    ... whiskey.

Having started on my voyage of discovery of whiskey, I ask the Brethren for guidance on what I should be trying.

So far I have tried the following:

    Jim Beam - ok
    Black Bush - ok
    JD - no comment
Famouse Grouse - the bottle I got at Christmas didn't survive past New Year. Yum.
Wild Turkey - damn good, though I made the rookie mistake of putting coke in it. Note: you can't snort Wild Turkey.
Chivas Regal 18yr old (think that's how you spell it): Damn Good.

And the current favourite: Tullamore Dew. The whiskey of the gods.

So, what else is out there I should be trying? I notice a bottle of Middleton in the local off licence for €125. With the birthday coming up soon, should hints be dropped? :D Not sure what year/type it is, but it looks good.

I had this "Vat 69" stuff on my birthday last May.
Ablsolutely VILE. But worth the experience.

Try that if you can find it. Costs about €7 in Spain.(My ma brought it back!)

    Middelton is lovely.

Try bushmills 21 if you see it. And Makers Mark if you like Burbon

I wouldn't bother. IMO it has less flavour & body than a regular bottle of Jemmy.

Try Green Spot. It's my personal favourite, quite like Midleton, but nowhere near as expensive. Absolute fried gold my friends! ;)

I like this one so much, I named my house after it!

    No, really.

Been to the distillery too, on the beautiful, unspoilt island of Islay.

I used to suggest Bhunnabain as an introduction to the peaty, unique taste of the Islay malts, but hey, just steam in & enjoy!

If you can get your hands on any of them I'd recommend the following bourbons:

    Booker's (made by Jim Beam)
    Eagle Rare
    Old Charter
    Woodford Reserve
Knob Creek (another Jim Beam small batch bourbon)
    Maker's Mark

    Glenfiddich! Not a bad dram!

    +1

    Top notch stuff

And if I'm absolutely hammered after a days drinking and can handle no more.. Southern Comfort... Any other time I wouldn't touch it.

Head to the Celtic Whiskey store on Dawson St. It's whiskey heaven, the staff are very helpful, and there's usually a half dozen bottles open for tasting.

I think we should put in a separation clause to indicate that bourbon is a girly drink for girls mixed with coke and sometimes jizz, whereas whiskey, or whisky, comes in two forms, scotch and Irish and is fantastic in both these forms. This bourbon crap is not and never will be whiskey(y). It appears to be made from yankpiss and licourice.

Well I really fell that you're so wrong on several counts that I'm obliged to put you straight. For one, I will not allow so much as an ice cube into my bourbon, never mind Coke. I've yet to be offered jizz as a mixer, but I will refuse it in the same way that I refuse Coke should the occasion arise. Secondly, try some of my bottle of Booker's that weighs in at 60-63% alcohol neat and tell me it's a girly drink. Third, bourbon is as legitimate a form of whiskey as scotch or Irish whiskey. There are many brands and distilleries, and as many subtleties in the range of quality bourbons as there are when considering the relative merits of various single malts. And finally there is nothing added to bourbon to influence its taste in any way. It's made from grain (minimum 51% corn) and water. Yankpiss is used to make B*******r.

I cant surmount the taste difference barrier. I have had some bad scotch (Vat 69) and some bad Irish too (too many to even mention) and I just dont see the similarity between these noble whiskeys and the bourbun. I have tried to get on the jack daniels train, but I invariably get ejected early for spitting on the conductor.
And you are right, a good whiskey should be untouched by mixer. But personally I always like a few oul tufts of ice. That could be because I am currently in Australia and any non-refridgerated whiskey tastes slightly deep fried.
Actually you know thats not a bad idea. Deep fried whiskey?

You see, there's your problem right there. JD isn't bourbon at all, it's made in Tennessee. To be bourbon it has to be made in Kentucky. To be fair, that's only a technicality, it's made by the same process, but basically JD would be your bourbon equivalent of Paddy or Teachers, for example, an entry level whiskey. At this level my own preference is Wild Turkey, although the particular variety available here is actually higher quality than JD as it's 50% alcohol. Try Jim Beam and see how you get on, to me it has a slightly more "whiskey like" taste than other bourbons.

Bourbon has a distinct flavour that isn't to everyone's taste, although as I've said there are plenty of variations, finding the one you like is the real trick. That said, Glenfiddich has been mentioned on this thread a couple of times, and TBH I wouldn't thank you for it if you gave me a glass of the stuff, although I'm sure there are plenty of scotches I would like if I took the time to explore them. That's the real joy of whiskey of all types, and alcohol in general, there's so much choice and so little time. :)

Sounds like a plan for the next BGRH beers. Or more accurately BGRH whiskey (doesn't have the same ring to it).

Anyone ever try Kilbeggan? I've passed it on numerous occasions and have been threatening to drop in, but just never got around to it. Never tasted it either.

Edit: I am of course referring to the whiskey, not the town. That just didn't read right.

Kilbeggan's not too bad. Like Dunphy's it would be bordering on what you'd use mainly for hot whiskeys.

Nothing wrong with a drop of whiskey on a rag to clean a pearl necklace. I've heard that those stains can be a bügger to shift.

You guys are getting all to philosophical. Two beers is the obvious answer.

    Zaph,

I agree that Bourbon has a distinct taste. I wouldn't thank anyone for giving me a Jim Beam, Wild Turkey, Four Roses or whatever. Having spent time in the states and tried more versions over there it's not for me. I think Dr Bollocko overstated his point. Maybe we should just recognise that there are Whiskey people and Bourbon People. And don't get me started on Brandy!!!:mad::mad:

Tom: don't buy the Midleton. Try a shot in the pub instead and if you like it, then go for it.

Do get Redbreast 12 yr old. Pure, distilled, whiskified deliciousness in a bottle :)
Jemmy of course; and scotch wise there's a nice one called Bunnahabhainn.

That whisky trail thing looks good. But if you're ever in Cong get down to the fisheries hotel. Bloody hell!
The first time I went in there all I saw behind the bar was practically every single kind of bottle of scotch ever distilled. The previous owner used to go to different distilleries in Scotland every year and bring back the bottles with him. Fair play to him. Such dedication to his art. :D

Dr I understand your passion. But this is BGRH feel the love. Hey next time you're in the Bar get Zaph a bourbon and who knows he might get you your whiskey of choice. BGRH Civil War? Nah it'll never happen. Friendly disagreements only.
