So i decided as an experiment to throw a set of tonerider alnico IV PAF's (cheap as chips) into my sg special to see how they sounded, and to be honest they beat the piss out of the stock gibson 490 alnicos that were in there... my prob is that after wiring em according to seymour duncan wiring schematic (it matches exactly) once the selector switch is set in the middle the sound is quite weak and pissy, but if i dial back the bridge pickup a tiny bit it gets louder and more present.... any ideas what the **** i've done???? any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Out of phase?

actually another important fact that mite explain it, with the bridge pick up i felt that with the poles and slugs facing the way they were, the poles right next to the bridge it was a bite too bright and weak so i turned it around, so the slugs were closes to the bridge and the poles closer to the neck... that could make them out of phase yeah????

have to change that back round... was just wonder what would it be like if i threw my old gibson 490 R alnico neck pickup in the bridge position of SG...; would it work? would it sound woeful? anyone else ever used neck pickups in bridge positions?

The orientation of the poles has nothing to do with the phasing you're hearing. A lot of pickups don't follow the SD colour code. You need to find the hot and ground of each coil (assuming they're 4 conductor) and work out your wiring from there. Those pickups might follow DiMarzio's colour code, GFS have their own colouring, using the SD diagram is no guarantee of success. Did the pickups come with any kind of instruction?

yeah it siad to solder the hot (red) wire to the middle lug of the volume pot...which doesnt make any sense at all...i went along with it ,soldered my ground wires to the back of the pot,, and the black and whites are to be soldered together n taped off (not coil tapping these). I followed the instructions and the sound was tepid, n the tone control didnt have any real effect. I decided to swap it around and solder the hot wire to the end lug of the pot, which in turn is connected to the tone pot. that worked way batter.,... have i done something wrong??? I think these pickups have the same colour coding as dimarzio,(not SD as i stated before).
