I was looking at a laptop and all other specs are fine but it's got a turion 64 x2 2 ghz cpu, now I know nothing about amd cpu's I've never had one before, as far as the turion 64 x2 goes is it a case of yea it's good just not quite as good as a core 2 duo or is it one to avoid entirely

I asked the same question on a few forums and everyone told me to avoid the AMD like the plague, maybe someone can explain this in detail for you cause I don't know the specifics.

easy thing, Core 2 duo just beats the cr4p out off Amd, since all the bencharmarks made have proven that all the core 2 duo are faster in every single way that their competence with the same price, specially the core 2 duo E6600 who I would suggest to buy but u can find it only in clevo or they resellers, Sager, Alienware, RockDirect, etc.

This year Intel won the processor competence.

    Hope I helped u.

While the above is absolutely true, I wouldn't rule out AMD if the price was right. I have both a top of the range Dell with an Intel processor and a couple of AMD based laptops. For normal, day to day work, surfing, email etc, the AMDs run Vista Business no problem at all. Just don't expect to play games or edit videos on them.

Thats way too generic of a comparison, have a look at the thread title.

I have a Mercedes, it is faster than a BMW...

.... but can you use the speed on the public road?

The point I was trying to make is that the press get all excited about the differences in processors. February's Custom PC magazine has an article running over 20 pages comparing all the different processor models. But they will all do the basics just fine. If all you need is a Corolla, why buy a Merc?

When I read the question, it sounded like the question was avoid completely or recognise it's not the best. My perspective is, don't avoid completely just don't spend premium money on them.

What? They'll play games (although the graphics card is a lot more important in gaming) and edit videos fine although it'll be a little slower. The core 2 duos are great processors but the turions are pretty good. The TL-60 (which is the processor I presume you are on about) is very good and would be equivalent to a core 2 duo T5250 (1.5Ghz).

They are decent. Just because Core 2 is faster, doesn't completely negate X2. It's still got it's place and often means a much cheaper laptop that won't be any slower to 95% of people who'd actually be using it.

Do you even know anything about the processors in question or are you just saying what you're 'heard' around the place?

Not only are you talking about desktop chips, but euro to euro, X2 is actually sometimes faster against the relevant stock Intel Chip. Intel chips are more efficient at the same speed levels, and overclock like a dream, something X2 cannot. But they've gotten so cheap now that the fastest X2 is as cheap as a budget Core 2.

The E6600 is an old chip now and way outdated so why would you specifically recommend that one? On a laptop forum, no less, where such a chip isn't exist?

Bottom line: The X2 is a fine processor and may be technically below the Core 2 in most aspects but you're talking good vs great, not crap vs great.

Terrorfirmer said exactly what I was trying to say but he said it a lot better. Amd may have fallen behind but not by too much. Lets hope they have something really good waiting in the pipelines.
