    Hi,

The gf is looking to get a laptop. She want's something smaller than my Inspiron 6400 (15.4"). She'd also like XP.

My first choice was Dell, but they seem to only do Visio now, and wouldn't build one to my spec with XP. So we're thinking of going down to Dixons to take a look.

Can anyone recommend a Brand/model that's reliable? It's for home use, so surfing the web primarily!

    Thanks,

    Kev.

Well i wouldn't knock dell just yet, as i hear their vostro range when bought with vista business give you the option of "downgrading" to xp. Is portability really an issue? if it's going to spend it's time on a desk i'd be looking for something with a large screen and comfortable layout rather than a "smallish" laptop. Either way, i believe the Vostros come in a 14.1 inch screen size which is nice, not a whole lot more portable than the 15.4 but it's getting there. You can pick up a moderatly spec'd one for a very decent price these days. You find the vostros in the business section of the dell.ie site. I wouldn't recommend going down the Dixons route as i've heard horror stories about customer support and pricing. Well good luck.
    Alan.
