Problems with ram upgrade!!

I've just upgraded from 1Gb ram to 2Gb, I have two memory slots on the motherboard so it was just a matter of removing both 512mb sticks and replacing them with two 1Gb sticks, the problem is that when I installed both 1Gb sticks and restarted the computer it's telling me there is only 1.50Gb ram on board! I have switched sticks around in slots, started up computer and it is still the same. I did a Crucial scan and got the same results.
Both sticks have 1Gb labels and are identical in appearance,I'm just wondering could it be a 512mb memory stick with a 1Gb label on it. If any body has come across this situation before I would be very grateful for some feedback.

Where did you get the 1gig memory from? Are they identical? Do they have them same number/size/position of chips on the outside etc? Can you read any numbers or specs off them?

hmmm...it normal to have, say 2gb registering as 1950mb, but only 1.5gb...thats odd...my 2gb ram comes up as 2038mb...

    where did you buy it?

Both sticks are identical, bought them as a pair,(PC2-5300)1GB DDR2 667Mhz DIMM as labeled on actual memory stick. I purchased from 7dayshop.com. Thanks for your interest and I will gladly welcome any other advice.
    Regards

Put them in one at a time and see if it says 1GB each time?

What kind of computer/motherboard have you got? Maybe 1.5GB is the max it supports.

Thanks NoMe,yeah tried each seperately and geting 1Gb from one stick and computer won't boot up with other stick. . . . . seems that it is a problem with only one stick yet when two sticks are installed I have 1.5Gb ram? Mother board is a Packard Bell Cuba MB (MS_7301) and it's max is 2Gb.

This free program will tell you how much RAM you have or look in my computer. I have 2 gigs and it also says 2038

    try this website

    www.crucial.com

this allows you to run a check on your pc and tells you what memory you have installed..how many slots available etc..
we use it all the time at work for ordering memory etc for pcs/servers.

Yep thats what I did originally, told me what memory I had, what memory to purchase for upgrade, what m/boards max support is and the amount of slots that were available. Thanks thebourke for advice but I think now that one of the new memory sticks is a dud.

Certainly looks the most likely cause.
