and I'll be getting my first handicap.

I get 'regularish' lessons, and my swing is improving in a technical sense but only in the driving range. I'm hopeful that more time and experience looking at the ball with grass underneath it will improve me.

Can I participate in club competitions without my three cards? Even if I'm not allowed win (not likely to anyway!)
I won't have 3 pals up there, so I need to wrangle my way into another regular 4 ball.

I'm very keen, and have been a driving range regular for a long time. I don't really feel I've improved as much as I'd hoped, and want to get a feel re: goals I should be setting for myself and how to go about them

You cant actually enter competitions until you get your handicap but you should have no problem finding a few lads to play with so you can your three cards in. At least you're taking lessons and have a bit experience behind you, you're already in a better position than most taking up the game.

As for goals and development, they will all fall into place now you've got into it properly. I wouldn't be discouraged about not developing as fast as you'd hoped as progress is very difficult to guage without playing regularly. But thats gonna change now ;)

    Enjoy it...

If you've joined Elmgreen (which i think you said a while back that you had) then give me a PM. I'm a member up there and would be happy to help you get your cards. I play pretty much every sunday.
