I have an inspiron 6000 for a couple of years.never been able to connect to internet..not really a problem as i only mainly used it for projects etc.
now i find out i need to reload windows to get it working and i dont have the windows cd.tried the dell site which is impossible to use so....
    a few questions.
    1) should i have got the windows cd with the laptop when i purchased it?
    2) my service tag wont work on the dell site..anyone know why?

    thanks in advance guys!

I'd imagine you would have got a cd with the laptop if its a couple of years old, they've only recently stopped the shipping CD's with laptops shenanigans. As for your service tag, I've had a couple of customers machines tag's not register on the Dell website, check that the service tag listed in your BIOS (press F2 on laptop starting up to check) is the same as the tag underneath the laptop.
You *could* download a copy of Windows XP or borrow one from a freind, as long as you have the license it will all be legal.

There is also a recovery partition on the Inspiron 6000 to restore the laptop to factory settings. YOU WILL LOSE ALL DATA THAT YOU HAVE PUT ON THOUGH!

Not true, follow the guide here and do a Repair Install of XP , basically reinstalls all OS files but leaves your stuff alone.

Edit: I whole heartidly endorse doing a backup also anyways!

I emailed Dell about 2 weeks ago and asked them for all the origical CD's for all pre-installed software on my inspiron 6000 and they sent it out in about a week. I got the Windows CD plus all the drivers cd's and other software.

As for Service Tag, aint got a clue.

press ctrl and f11 on boot, this will wipe the image for you back to factory. you will have the laptop as if its just out of the box, from a S/W poinf of view anyway.
