printing/framing D70 pics

    Hi guys,

Sorry if this is a silly question. Was looking at printing up some pics and putting them into small/basic frames. Girlfriend had picked up some frames in the shops (10x8) went onto photobox to print and noticed that when 10x8 is selected I have to crop a fair bit as original resolution is 3008x2000:

    (direct link: http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/6624/d70cropcu8.jpg)

I noticed the Shrink to Fit option but that adds a large white border and obviously reduces the print size.

Also most of the basic frames available in the shops seem to have similar proportions. Was wondering what the workaround for this would usually be? Are specialist frames/printing services available?

    Many thanks

Well, normally I crop my images to 8x10 or 8x12. They then fit the "standard print proportions".

In general, it seems better when you retain control, and crop the image yourself.

8x12 would be nearer to camera proportions and you can get frames to match this too.

I agree with PaulW. You're best to crop the image yourself on your own machine , then upload to Photobox. I use Photoshop / Lightroom for my crops but if you don't have these, I'm sure something like Picasa will allow you do the same. Good luck with the cropping!

got some photo's back from Pixmania, all were 8x12 but they must have converted to "metric" paper, before 8x12 was 8x12 but now its 11.8".
I know it's nothing major and I only noticed it as it cut off my copyright on the bottom left.

    15x20 6" x 8"
    20x27 8" x 10.6"
    20x30 8" x 11.8"

So I may have to change my cropping to metric ? :(
Suppose that all photo paper will migrate to "metric" paper

OP, the average DSLR the pictures are created with an aspect ratio of 3:2. This is the ratio of the longest side to the shorter side. It matches a 6x4 shot perfectly.

10x8 is a standard enlargement but its aspect ratio is 5:4 so by definition, it's a slightly different shape to your picture out of the camera and will requre cropping. The next best size to match your camera is 12x8 because that is a 3:2 AR as well. However, it is damn impossible to get 12x8 frames in my experience so I stopped cropping them that size.

Lately I have been cropping all mine to A4 because frames are easier to come by and it's closer to a 3:2 than a 10x8 is.

Thanks so much for the replies guys.

I can live with the amount of cropping with A4 prints so will give them a try.

Does anyone know anywhere in Dublin that do 12x8 frames (basic/cheap) on the off chance?

    many thanks
