I see in Emo Court in Laois yesterday a dead deer that had been shot. Seemingly its been said that there is somewhon around the area shooting the Deer (on protected OPW land) and leaving them there.

Personally, I think the dirty b*stard who is doing it is using a small calibre rifle (prob a.22 magnum) and they are running away after being hit and dying elsewhere. Its ridiculous, they issue Deer Licenses for a reason and it its giving all the rest who are hunting them with dignity and within the law a bad name. If only i could catch them at it.

The reason for the post is to highlight what is going on in the area and if anyone here is from around the area could they keep there eyes pelled please!!

There is a saying "every village has at least one idiot" .
Looks like it's true for Emo.

I was down in Mayo the weekend before last and the same thing is happening down there, farmers are giving out about the deer and the local fox shooters blasting them with swifts and hornets and leaving them there, its wrong

I am sure the super in Portlaoise is well aware of the situation. There was some jackass shooting deer with a .22lr near abbeyleix awhile back. Cops caught him redhanded.

    Poaching is rife in Ireland!!
And it gives law abiding shooter a bad name.
Deer are shot with small 22s arround this area to and with shotguns aswell!
Its a pity really for animal and shooter.

Think that was hearsay, no court case or prosecution. Unless you have proof?

ok lads ,most illegally shot deer .ie poached ,lamped ,shot over the boundries ,on the park . .call it what you like ,is done by licenced hunters.mostly lads out a few hours before dawn or a few hours after dusk.then you have the other poachers the money men. there are mostly out from 11pm till 3am,they mostly work in teams of two .the first team spotting shooting the second picking up the shot deer.all most impossible to catch them .unless you have a garda or a ranger with you .who see s whats going on even then its hard to get to court...a few years ago myself and a friend watched four crews lamping the wicklow gap in two hours .and its worse it has got ..time for the hunters to look after there own

The real issue here is the good name off hunters and the unnecessary suffering of animals by too small a cal. of weapon. Poaching is a different issue and is prob;) carried out by people who have a deep respect for the quarry.. Its is a joke that these animals are left to rot.. and this is the biggest crime of all..

it's fine saying all, that but how many people are being refused large calibre guns by different supers.
what support is being given to shooters and farmers by coilte and the gardai, some of the coilte leases are very expensive, but without them control can be very difficult.
i know by me farmers are crying out for help in controling deer numbers. i think a doubling of the seasin should be considered and the use of lamps in certain areas,i know this can be applied for under licence

Your only allowed lamp deer in the UK if there is a vermin problem, and from what I remember by special license. As for Deer being shot by small caliber bullets and shotguns, this is rife and there are duck heads who will do it and leave it in the back of a ditch. There was plenty of deer around my neck of the woods, I used to see them when out after foxes, then local farmers where giving out about them competing with grazing, no more deer (or at least very scarce) and I have my idea who the shooter was..... As for respect that same dude is a typical "Pot hunter" there was a wiley old pheasant that everyone struggled to get, but every weekend you tried to get him (You know the sort) one day I hear yer man had got him, more power I thought until i heard he sniped him with 22.

There are plenty more like him out there:mad:

One day I read about how person A said that about person B to person C in the local pub. Person B successfully sued person A for something like 30,000 euro...

It's maybe not a bad idea allowing temporary use of shotgun slugs in tightly defined areas under close supervision from the local ranger in regards to numbers shot etc when deer are causing serious trouble for farming. In that way you'd enable a farmer to sort this problem or let the lads who regularly shoot on his land look after it.

Shooting with a lamp isnt allowed in england!! (deer)
But it is in Scotland with a licence.
As for the poacher that just shoots for the pot well id doubt they would do very much damage and usually are respectfull and dont leave the animal to rot.
Slugs should also be allowed in 12g as its allowed in most other countries.
    And the pack a puch!!
