Stretch non-native resolution

When my laptop is running a fullscreen program at less than native resolution, it wont stretch the image over the whole screen but instead will display it with a black border. Is there any way to fix this? Acer Aspire 2920z

My stupidity scares me sometimes.

Id assumed that because it was new the drivers were up to date.
