Does anyone use their Meteor phone as a modem ?

If so, what kind of speeds do you get (on average) ?

i know they're due to be going to 3G at some stage but in the meantime I'm just wondering how they stack up against the potentially oversubscribed 02 and 3 networks ?

Well if you are using an edge handset, the speeds are pretty good. I dont use it as a modem anymore (had used it for around 6 mnoths upto November). I switched pics off and it was quite fast being honest. Reminded of a 1mb broadband line. Obviously with pics on, it would slow down a bit, but speed wasnt a neccessity!

Is it expensive to do that?

unless you have some kind of data package, 1 GB would cost over €5000

If you're using it on PaYG, it'd be cheaper to buy eircom :)

Bill Pay (Talk 400 and above) has an unlimited add on for 30e a month. There's a smaller 250meg add on also for all bill pay plans, but that's no good unless you're solely using it for mails.

it'd be cheaper to employ somebody to run back to your house any time you want a website, burn the page to a cd and bring it to you

and if the file you want is a few GB, you might even get a faster effective data rate if there's no traffic :D

edit:just did a quick calculation, EDGE can transfer a max of 849 MB per hour so if the journey takes less than an hour and the file is more than 849 MB, you're getting a better data rate :)
