I've been looking around for good homebrew for my psp recently. I'm going to be travelling quite a bit in March. Anyway, here's what I use:

PMPlayer Advance - Media player. Amazing piece of software. Allows you to underclock the PSP to 66MHz to massively extend the battery life, supports resuming from where you stopped, standby resume, streaming over wifi, etc. etc. etc. Just brilliant. I use this every day.

Bookr - ebook reader. Nuff said.

Snes9x TYL - SNES emulator. Mario on the PSP!!

If everyone could list stuff they use regularly we could probably get a really decent listing together.

The best emulators by far are NJ's emulators (capcom play system 1 and 2, neo geo and neo geo CD). Also, the gameboy advance emulator is amazing.

Any chance of some links to those? I'd love to create a definitive list of the really good (as tested by boards users) homebrew.

PSPFiler: File Browser, XMB MS Icon Organiser.

PSPTube: Youtube flv video browser and player.

Picodrive: Sega Genesis / MegaDrive emulator

    Daedalus: Quite good N64 emulator

ScummVM - play all the old LucasArts point 'n click adventure games, plus a few from other publishers :)

Its built into the Sony FW. Its called POPS. All PSP FW from 3.00 have the Sony PSX emulator.
If you are on CFW, you can use a plugin by Dark_Alex called POPSloader. This plugin enables you to select which POPS you wish to use when playing your PSX games.

There's a great guide to emulators here:

What kind of extended battery life do you get using this application? How many hours playback would it provide?

I have yet to test it fully (from full to empty) at 66MHz. I was running at 120MHz for about a year and averaged 8-10 hours playback per charge. My nephew watched half of romeo and juliet on it there last night at 66MHz and the battery was at 98% afterwards.

On the emulators front: I've just discovered netplay in the new version of Snes 9x TYL (I haven't used it in aaaages). Absolutely CLASS! Was playing mario kart against my son there. Deadly stuff. :D

Hey Khannie what program do you use to convert files to PMP format?

How well does the PSX emulator work? is it as easy as ripping a PSX game to an iso and ragging it across to the memory stick?

    If so... zOMG!

I run linux, so I use mencoder (I actually had to hack the changes together myself....my first and only open source project). On windows though, xvid4psp is absolutely superb looking.

2 pass encodes will give substantially better quality for the same file size (but obviously take longer). I convert in batches and leave it running overnight, so conversion time isn't a big issue for me. If you're short on space, low quality sound with 256 kbit video looks fine (typical 43 minute tv show episode comes in at 110MB with the settings I use). If you have gigs a plenty and a high def source to encode from, 800 or even 1000 kbits looks holy crap good. I generally use around 450 with a 2 pass and find that this gives a good blend (around 210 MB for a 43 minute tv show episode).

It works perfectly. You rip, do something with popstation that I can't remember, then put on the memory stick. CRASH BANDICOOOOOOT!!!!!!!

The ps1 emulator is currently the only good reason to get a psp!! Its amazing, and so easy.

Close enough, if it's a PAL game then some of them might have a problem (you might have to do PAL fixes) but in general you just rip the ISO, and run it through a program like Popstation (there are versions with a GUI). It'll make an EBOOT file that you copy across to the memory stick and that's pretty much it.

Some games have issues though so look around, and sometimes you might need to download an NTSC ISO (or EBOOT if someone's already made it) if the PAL one won't work. With some of the apps out there you can even make your own fancy images for the game that you'll see on the PSP when you select it (as you would with PSP games). Some great examples on Youtube if you search "custom eboot" etc. Lots of handy info on this forum, among others. A few games need fixes like changing the game ID number to the Japanese version, but that forum or a quick Google search for the specific game should help, if you're having issues.

Stephen beat me to it but definitely have to add a vote for ScummVM too.

I rip my games to ISO or BIN/CUE then convert them to EBOOT.PBP with this program and I also insert icons, background image, sound file from here.

I love mine too... things that annoy me: lack of storage, lack of pdf viewer for my slim. :(

Yeah, me too but it needs a few more revisions. When strmnNrmn gets that running fullspeed then the psp is complete

Gonna give that daedalus a lash alright.

The only thing holding me back from getting a slim is the lack of 1.50 kernel support. Once DA has that done, I'd say I'll probably sell my 1000 for the upgrade.

It's released, yeterday i think. Download "timemachine" from here

I might try it out during the week

Heres hoping DA turns to the ps3 side of things now that there was a nand dump of the firmware.

Nice. Very early days though. His stuff has a history of being buggy at the start.

edit: Just read more of that thread. Looks like alpha software for now. I'm guessing it wont be long until it's part of the standard cfw releases though. I'll start putting away the pennies for a slim now though. :)
i really dont get the whole daedalus thing. It cant play most games. Even after setting custom options.

I just got version R13 from sourceforge. Tried out mario64 and DK64. Both were unplayable. Pity. Looking forward to R14 though. I'll keep coming back to this one. Some superb games on the N64 back in its day.

I dont get why people are cautious of 1.50 kernel support for slim. It doesnt need 1.5 kernel!! I had an old model running on 1.5 kernel and every homebrew i had also works on my slim. There is nothing that hasn't worked on my slim! So dont let the lack of 1.5 kernel put you off. Most new homebrew is written for 3.xx kernel now anyway.

As for daedalus, for the next release strmnNrmn will finally be making use of the the ME for the audio (a separate chip for audio processing only) which should greatly improve the emulation. Hopefully!
