Been playing 6 string for long long time (6 years or so). Been wanting to start playing 12 string. It is difficult to transition between the two? what are the similarities/differences in playing

AFAIK they play exactly the same, each 2 strings of the 12 are played as 1 string would be played on the 6 string, and the few I've played have been playable exactly like a 6 string, although they feel a bit different.

I'd imagine they'd be a bitch to tune / restring though.

i bought a Takemine 12-string (semi_acoustic) a couple of years ago, and it's really fun to play. Beautiful sound from it. It has an inbuilt tuner which is a godsend. And yes, changing strngs in a pain in the ass, but I usually multitask and change them while watching a fav tv program!

The only difference I find playing my friend's 12 string is I can't finger-pick. I can't finger-pick very well on a 6 string but I find I hit more than one, well two, strings when I don't mean to on the 12. Also, with the 12 I can't strike each of the strings as hard with my fingers again when finger-picking so I've just taken to using a pick when playing that.

Great fun to play. Great full sound. Check out SRV playing 12 string, it's incredible.

Oh yes, quite amazing! Makes you really want to practice practice practice... and then I return to lazy mode again.
