COD4 stats wiped when you play at different PC ???

Hi, i wonder has anyone else come across this before - when i play COD4 on my PC and build up stats and all, everything is OK. if i then decide to log on to a mates PC and continue playing with my profile (I copy the profile directory from <install location>Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles) i get the error "an error occurred while reading the stats data. your stats have been reset". My stats are then reset back to zero which kinda sucks.

We both have legitimate versions, with legitimate keys and all that so there is no messin with piracy or anything, its just that sometimes its handier for me to play at his PC, and sometimes its handier for me to play at my own PC and i dont want to have to run 2 different profiles. I know i am kinda messin around with moving directories, but it works with single player and i would imagine there would be no reason Activision would want to prevent me from doing this since theres nothing wrong with it (as far as i can see?)

Any ideas anyone? I couldn’t find anything on this on the COD website…

    Thanks

There is a file ( on your mates pc ) that you need to edit to include the name of the profile that you have braught over from your PC. At least thats what it looks like to me, I have never actually tried it .

hmm, not sure if this is the case actually - i just created a new profile as a test, and then logged out of COD4 and did a search on my hard drive for any file containing the text of the username of my new profile. there was 1 directory of that name, and a file with the name in it, but both were in the <install location>Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles location, which means i would've copied any files containing the name of my profile to my mates PC before running COD4 anyway, and yet my stats would still get wiped ...

    Thanks for trying anyway.

    any other ideas anyone?

You coppied the whole profile folder?? If you put that back in the right position that means you would have overwritten your friends profile. I will try copying form my laptop to me pc now, I'll get back to you in a few minutes.

Sorry for double post , but I just want to update the OP. I just coppied over my "chris" folder (off of my laptop ) which is the name of my profile to my profile folder on my PC and it worked no problem ( however it keeps all of the old settings graphics etc so you will need to update it if the hardware is greatly different.)

Wow thanks a million for going to so much trouble to try and help me out :-)

I have checked about copying my profile folder to my mates PC, it doesnt overwrite his profile (unless we happened to have the same username, which we dont). All it does is place my profile beside his, and then when you start the game you can choose which profile to log on with.

In fact now that I think of it, it has to be something to do with the CD key used being somehow tied to the profile, cos we have exactly the same PC hardware-wise, the only thing that would be different is obviously we would have used different keys during install, other than that we are same version etc. If this is the case, it must be Activision has taken active steps to prevent people doing this, but I dont see why they would do that. I assume your laptop and PC were installed off the same disk (therefore same CD key), if so then i reckon that proves my theory :-(

OK I thought you coppied over the whole folder called Profile. Yeah I used the same CD key for both installs, thats strange that that would be the reason though .

I was wondering, I've had the same thing happen to me and it is indeed due to the CDkey change, but does it reset to your original stats when you return to your computer? Or do they stay reset at 0?

I would imagine they stay reset. But surely you would have left the profile on your original PC?

I know this thread is old but found this thread when looking for how to be able to play on another computer with your old profile because i copied cod 4 from my old computer to my new computer and my profile got reseted. I found the reason why it did that, you need to have the same cd key to be able to play on your prfoile on another computer and if you copy the hole game from another computer you need to click on the enter key code in multiplayer options and put in your cd key and than copy the profile again and it will work. Worked for me :)
    Hope this helped :)
