Time Capsule?

I was thinking of buying an external hard drive and a new wireless router for my new macbook running leopard and a pc running vista. Would the time capsule work smoothly for both (the specs on apple.ie outline that it would work) or would I be better off buying separate items and not necessarily apple brand? Suggestions/Opinions???

    Thanks :)

So far from looking at Apple Discussion board it would seem that it works well on both although there may be some teething problems at first.
Looking to get one myself in the coming weeks but just want to make sure no major bugs before I part with my dosh!!!

I am happy i got time capsule. I reckon it is a must buy.

I will test more stuff out tomorrow, like hooking my printer up to it and joining my macbook up to it. I am too tired now to face a problem, that's if a problem does occur. But i do not expect a problem cause everything just ran so smoothly. My imac is backing up now and that is where i will finish tonight cause it will take some time for that to finish. I would like to go to bed tonight happy and that is why i will fiddle around more with it tomorrow.

set up was so so easy.

here is my report on time capsule

    1) set up was a cinch.
    2) my macbook had no problems. 100% perfect.
    3) my imac had a minor problem --- back-up was interrupted and that meant that Time Machine was set up, but not working ( making regular back ups) ---- this was fixed by clicking the time machine back up icon in the menu bar ( top right, 4 away from the irish flag. well on my computer) and i clicked the back up now option. I had to wait a few hours for this to fix itself, but all is perfect now.

    4) My printer. when i bought my printer i was aware that it cannot print wireless. But i thought, maybe time capsule is different. Guess what, it worked.
At first ( after hooking my printer to TC) it would not print. So i went into System preferences, clicked print & fax, clicked the - button, then clicked the + button. I could not believe it -- it said the printer was hooked into TC. Now my printer is part of TC and it works perfect.

Time Capsule is awesome. It is mind boggling how simple the thing was to set up, how easy it is to fix a problem and how beautiful it runs.

    Sorry, i forgot something,

    5) my macbook could not get an internet connection from my bedroom before i bought TC. Too far away from my router. Since buying TC i get a connection in my bedroom now.

I've just had a very different experience. My MacBookPro had the darndest time finding the TC. When it did, it couldn't read it. After a lot of effort, including a factory resest of the TC, it managed to add it to my network, but not to replace the router. In that set up, backup was appallingly slow, killing my internet connectivity. After 20 hours, backup was about 10% complete. Gave up, reset everything, tried again to set it up as router. Failed miserably. Head in hands. Any help welcome.
Q: I have a netopia router ane eircom broadband. Does anyone know if this is 802.11n or what letter it has after the .11 (and does anyone know why a consumer should care about this junk in 2008?). Help appreciated!!

I have eircom too and the same router also.

I tried a few options too. Not because i had problems but because i felt brave and just tried different things for the laugh. In the end i choose to share my TC with my router.
Back up was painfully slow with my imac, 60GB took hours. My macbook took 1 hour to back up 6GB. Do not back up system files, when you choose to leave SF's out you will be given the option to leave out all system files and unix tools. Accept this option.
Some night ( maybe tonight) around 7pm choose to back up. Leave your computer on all night and maybe just maybe it will be all done by time you get up tomorrow morning. Well, it should.

To tag onto this thread I've just bought a 500gb Time Capsule and I'm gearing myself up to add it to my wireless network (Eircom broadband with the Netopia 2247 wireless router).

From doing a bit of reading it seems the best approach is to reconfigure the Netopia to bridge mode (ie make it a simple modem) and ethernet connect it to the Time Capsule, which then becomes my router (taking advantage of the fact my Netopia is 802.11b and the Time Capsule is .11n).

Has anyone any views on this set-up, pitfalls to watch out for or any other points of interest?

Connecting to my network I have an Imac (wireless) Canon printer (wireless) Dell Axim (wireless) and a Slingbox (wired, which was an absolute pain to set up).

    Thanks

PS To maybe answer a few of the questions above regarding the length of time the Time Machine takes to backup to Time Capsule, most sites recommend connecting your computer by ethernet cable for the first backup unless your wireless card is 802.11n to reduce the time. Obviously incremental backups shouldn't take nearly as long.

I have my Netopia connected to my TC by ethernet cable, that is the best way.

I will suggest people hold off buying the TC for awhile. My TC worked perfect from the box and it worked perfect for a while. Then a few days after a software update all went bad. I cannot remember which software update fecked the TC, but i do remember reading that the update fixed a TC problem. Funny thing is when i was reading it i was thinking to myself 'jee, i have no problem with my TC'. i still clicked update.
I know it will get fixed again, just waiting. The only problem with it is backup. The wireless airport extreme part of it is perfect. It is just a backup problem.
    Wait.

Triple h could you give me a bit of info (either by posting or PM) on how you configured your set-up.

Unfortunately waiting to buy TC isn't an option for me, I'm committed!

To be honest i do not know what more to say. Setting up the TC was very easy, i tried every option. In the end i decided to join the two, the TC and the eircom router because eircom sent me a letter before xmas explaining how to make your internet safe from hackers or something like that. So my network settings were safe and i wanted to keep it that way.

if you go into applications and click Airport utility you can try a few different options. Really i think it is up to each person, Some might want to create a new wireless network, some might not. No damage will be done by experimenting, trust me i tried every option.

My Canon Printer was not wireless, it says so on the box, i knew it when i bought it. Now my printer is wireless ( you could say) thanks to TC

Thanks Triple H, went with the option of adding the TC to my existing network via ethernet cable, with the TC in bridge mode and my existing Netopia doing the routing.

I was aiming for the other way around (using TC as the router) but given I had huge trouble setting up port forwarding and static and dynamic ip ranges for a Slingbox, I went for the easy option and left the Netopia doing all the assigning.

Going to try first Time Machine back-up tomorrow, toying with the idea of connecting my Imac by ethernet for the first run to try and speed the process up.
