Q: I have heard that it is possible to live on Guinness and milk alone. Is this true, or even partially true?

A: This is not quite true. Guinness does contain many vitamins and minerals in small quantities, but is lacking vitamin C, as well as calcium and fat. So, to fulfil all of your daily nutritional requirements you would need to drink a glass of orange juice, two glasses of milk, and 47 pints of Guinness.

In 1967 I was a young research assistant at the British Hydromechanics Research Association at Cranfield in Bedfordshire. One of the researchers there had the contract to redesign the nozzle of the draught Guinness beer tap. Every morning by 9.30 he had over 50 pints of free Guinness lined up for any employee to drink. After the fourth day of the project no one had any stomach to down a pint first thing in the morning. And so the desolate researcher just had to pour the stuff that he could not drink himself down the drain. I wonder if he is still alive?

I was reliably informed that Guinness does contain all of the nutrients necessary to sustain life. What I was not informed of was the tendency of these nutrients to fall out of my bottom after about three days of testing the theory.

For those of you with Sky - there's a program on UKTV Food called "Glutton for Punishment" that did something like this recently. It is some mildly-annoying north american chap travelling the world & taking up food-related challenges in various locations.

Anyway, in Dublin he set out to survive on nothing but Guinness & water for a week. Over the course of the week some chap from the Hot House Flowers tempted him with the best of food & drink that Dublin had to offer, but he didn't cave in.

To be fair, it wasn't like he drank water all day & then a couple of pints in the evening. He cracked open a can for brekky, another for elevenses, a few pints for lunch, a couple more mid-afternoon & then a good few for dinner.

All told, he looked just a little bit shook after 7 days of it & lost a half stone.

The hubby went on a down patch last year and spent 3 whole days drinking guinness, by day in the local, by night from cans in the sitting room. His personal experience was:

End of Day 1: Grand, felt great, at end of night slept soundly

End of Day 2: Ok, bit rough, slight bit hungry

End of Day 3: Hit by a car on the way home, hospital, 1 broken leg

Make up your own moral to the tale

Drinking Guinness makes you get hit by cars?

    Highly doubtful.

Was he looking where he was going? Probably not.

This could never be tested. The effects of alcohol poisoning would be far more prevalent than any ill effects of not getting your nutritional requirements.

    I give you http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Boon
Boon achieved much fame and notoriety for consuming 52 cans of beer on a flight from Sydney to London before the victorious 1989 Ashes tour that saw Australia regain the trophy after five years of English dominance; the previous record had been held by Rod Marsh, who it is believed consumed 45 cans, although there is conjecture as to whether Marsh actually finished can #45, and some believe his attempt only equalled the record of 44 cans set by Doug Walters. Another passionate report of said record claims Boon finished 54 drinks totalling around 19.5 litres of beverages @ 5% alcohol (per 375ml serve), the majority of which consumed at such an altitude that the effects of the alcohol were doubled.
