Tracing abusive myspace account

    I have recently been pestered with abusive and threatening messages on my MySpace account, the messages were extremely personal and whoever was behind them knew me very well and they were quite vicious and malicious.

    This has left me a bit traumatised and obviously I would like to know who is behind this. How can I go about finding out who is behind it? I have tried mailing Myspaces technical support but 3 days later I am still awaiting a response.

    Is there anyway I can trace the IP address of the Myspace profile involved and thus find the culprit as at the minute Myspace are of no help - or has anyone had any luck with this before?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated in this instane.

    If they are contacting you through MySpace and not by IM or email, then I would think you would need the cooperation of the MySpace administrators?

    Now if by email or IM, then that's a different matter in terms of IDing the IP, ISP, country, and city (provided they are not using Tor or a proxy server or messaging from a wifi hotspot).

    You can use DNS stuff to trace which ISP the ip belongs to. From there you can contact the ISP tell them your storey and see what they can do from their end. Will Myspace not block the ip for you?

    Very little chance of anything really, If its very serious you could possibly get the guards involved other than that you haven't much chance of Myspace divulging anything as personal as an Ip address of location or someone, or anything remotely helpful to you.

    Thanks for the prompt replies guys, greatly appreciated!

    I have them blocked on MySpace now, so hopefully I won't be hearing from them again anytime too soon.

    Really I'd just like to know who it was as they knew a great deal about me and my circle of acquaintances.

    As i said I reported it to MySpace, still haven't heard anything back..

    Ah well I'll be happy enough if I don't hear from them again, would still like to know who it is though..

    you cant really get their ip to get through to the isp provider. Best bet is to contact myspace like you have but even at that rate they will just delete that account which obviously is put into place for abuse and will be easily re-created.

    Myspace (like any other reputable business on the net) won't give out another users IP address without a court order I imagine. Unless you want to go down that route, all you can do is ignore any messages, block the profiles and report the account to myspace.

    <edit: moved to comp/tech>
