Ok. Earlier today I got a phone call from this number

    01-4589821

and immediately hung up. The line was engaged for a while and I rang back.
Apparently it was Tallaght Garda Station and my car was reported for dangerous driving..bit of bull**** I think considering I'm the only one who drives my car and it's never been near Tallaght in it's lifetime.
"Garda" started asking me to show up to Tallaght Garda station with my license and proof of insurance etc.. I said there was no way I was going to go to tallaght for that. Said I was from Carlow etc and he goes ok..you can bring it there then, also..once I had brought them there I was to ring back Tallaght Garda Station on..some number that wasn't even the Tallaght Garda Station (11811 :o)

Now what the ... is that about? How would the Gardas even get my number in the first place to ring me ? Would I be right in thinking this is just a prank yeah, I feel fairly stupid about it like so don't rip through me please!

besides..what would happen if I didn't provide my license or anything? They'd only have a report of me dangerous driving (which..I didn't) so...not much they can do is there? :?

inform your local garda station and they will check the number im sure, if its not a garda station someone could be in trouble and another thing that makes me think it was a prank any time i have being contacted by garda station its always being private number.

Why don't ring the number you have. When it is answered they should tell you if it is Tallaght station or not. Some stations don't have an ex-directory number and this number could from a particular office and not the main number that 11811 may have.

There is a couple of things wrong here.
First if you are told to produce your documents at tallaght which is wrong. It is you who nominates which station you wish to produce at, not the garda.
Second why would you have to ring tallaght after you produce. A garda has no legal basis to demand a person to do that.
Being contacted by the gardai, even on your mobile is common enough. I use it all the time if I get a report of someone driving dangerously. I only warn them to slow down before someone gets hurt. That;s all. It is usually very easy to get someones phone number even if it is a mobile.

My advice is to produce your documents at Carlow but do not contact the number you were given. If a garda is investigating a report of dangerous driving then he/she can contact you on your mobile as they have already done. If you don't produce your documents within the 10 days then you could be summonsed to court for fail to produce d.l., driving with no d.l., fail to produce ins and driving without ins.
That is of course if it was a garda who rang you.

    This is an easy one.

Contact your local Garda station and give them the number you have below. Ask them to verify whether it is Tallaght Garda station or not. If it is - produce your documents in Carlow. If it's not and it's just a private residential or other business number, then write it off as someone winding you up.

If it is legit, then you need to find out when and where you are alleged to have driven dangerously. If you were nowhere near the reported location and you can prove it, let them know without delay.

I was asked to contact a certain Garda at a certain time in Carlow too to produce my documents..any legal basis for this ?

More evidence this is a windup ? Not answering the number they rang me off originally anymore either, whatsoever.

So annoying. Thanks for your help anyway. Will visit Carlow station later on.

this is what you need to do OP.
You are covering yer arse and avoiding getting into bother if it is a genuine police call.

Sounds like a bit of a wind up too be honest.

I have a number that starts with 456.. some people dont answer the phone to me because they think its a gardai station.

Oh by the way its a smart telecom number, any off your mates smart ?

My advise would be go down non the less... If it is a prank see how much **** you can get them in !

    Doesnt sound right.

Whats the Garda should have done is informed you that somebody had made a complaint about your manner of driving.

Then made a demand under Section 107 Road Traffic Act 1961 of you as the registered owner to tell the garda who was driving your car at that exact time. If you dont you are guilty of an offence.

Then made a demand of that driver to produce their license+insurance at a garda station of the drivers choice within ten days.

There is a lot that sounds wrong here.

How could it be correct for a Guard to ask anyone to prove they are licensed and insured to drive unless that Guard knows the person was driving? Its far too general to have any legal standing.

Also, why is nobody concerned about the possibility that someone is impersonating a member?

tell,em your sorry about that and you wont do it again, if they asked you to produce, them tell,em to clear off,, garda cant give demands down the phone, how would the back it up in court, anybody could have answered your phone., If they had PHONE POWER:p they wouldn't have to go on duty,,, bloody cop doesn't even know who he/she is talking to.... just be nice on the phone you don't ever want to piss off a cop.....

Stand up and fight the system or lie down and die

According to the gardai's website, the stations contact number is [FONT=Arial, Helvetica]01 - 6666000. I'm guessing it's someone who has a grudge against you. I would contact the gardai to report the possible porkies.
