Broken Nintendo DS

My sisters kids got a Nintendo DS from New York before Xmas. They must have dropped it cos one of the hinges is cracked and broken and it will not open properly - it opens back too much so that when you try to switch on it just flickers and goes dark. She took it into Gamestop and the guy there said the screen would have to be replaced and it wouldnt be worth her while to send it away to do this as it would cost too much. Is there anything she can do??
