PS3 - 60Gb V 40 GB

I am looking to buy a PS3. From what little I know, I would prefer the 60GB model since it is backwards compatible with PS2 games plus it has a bigger harddisk.

Why would I want the 40GB model?

I realise the 60GB model is no longer available in stores but I reckon I wil lget it second hand.

Before I go ahead and start looking for my 60GB PS3, what is the general consensus out there, why go for the 40gb model?

some people don't want the things that the 60gig model has and don't want to pay the premimum for it.

    simple huh?

Approx how much is a 60GB second hand versus a 40GB new?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,533 ✭✭✭Zonda999

I think that used 60gb's are 350 in gamestop but i'd imagine you'd have trouble finding one. You'd prob find 1 a lot cheaper on ebay or adverts.ie

But thats kindda my point, it seems like I could get a 2nd hand (perfect condition) PS3 with 60GB and PS2 compatability for the same price as a 40 GB PS3.

So why would I buy the 40GB model?
    Am I missing something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

    you're not missing anything,

sony released the 40gig because they were getting slaughtered in sales because the 60 gig was 630 euros, to stop this cull they ripped the ps3 apart and sold it for cheaper.

think about it, ireland is sony mad and the majority of casual gamers play *INSERT EA TITLE* 200X games so they've no need for backwards compatiblity if they can play their latest EA game.

that's all there is to it.

Thanks for clearing that up. Now to begin my search for a 60gb PS3.

It's pretty much the same machine, so unless you're actually going to be playing PS2 games on it, you don't really need to 60GB model.
I'd rather buy something new for peace of mind anyway...

it's a number of factors tbh, main one i think is that there were no good games out for the ps3 for the majority of time it was a 60gig machine only.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 550 ✭✭✭DePurpereWolf

First off, the harddrive size is not the most expensive thing in the machine, there is hardly any difference in cost between a 20 and a 40 GB drive.
Sony is using it though, to accent the difference between the models. Instead of going with a PS3.1, PS3.01 nomenclature, or whatever.
The 40GB comes with much less (bw-compatibility, card-reader, etc.) but what I've heard from others is that it is much more silent than the 60GB version (I've got a US import 60GB).
So I believe that the newer PS3 are more silent than the older ones. If that is worth it, is up to you.

The 60gb is silent compated to the Xbox though. You can only hear the fan in the 60gb if you mute the game, or are playing one of those games that has lots of quiet in them.

I got the 60gb in November. I got it more so because it worked out only €50 more than the 40gb but with a lot more in the bundle (2 games and 2 blu-ray movies)

I want the backward compatibility so I don;t need the PS2 plugged in beside the PS3.

Is it only europe that no longer has the 60GB version. U're right, I would like a new console to a used one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 110 ✭✭pphheerroonn

No they are now discontinuing the 80gb model in the US that can play PS2 games! hopefully the don't have the idea that backwards compatibility isn't important! I think its one of the stupidest things Sony could remove from the PS3, when people are finished with their PS2 they are gonna prefer a console that can play them as well as their next gen games. but the way it is now they may as well buy an xbox! Sony are stupid that way!

Anyway i think if you cant find a 60gb model you should wait a while longer! there are rumors of a 12ogb model or maybe a price cut since production costs have halved!:D

BC is gone for good IMO. Sony want people to stop playing PS2 games and start buying PS3 games. There maybe a version with larger HDD but it won't have BC.
Sony will be using one motherboard without BC from now one to save costs.

I bought the 60 gig version and a PS2 game has never gone into it. The PS2 however still gets played from time to time.

Without a Bluray drive none of the PS3 games would work.

The slimmer version is probably a bit fake maybe... But there will be one with a bigger hard drive.. They dont know how big it will be for our region, sometimes we dont get exactly the same, also you could be waiting a long time, no one knows for sure..

Unless someone with the better inside scoop can answer your question better than i..

and yes, every ps3 will have a blu ray.

Hard drive size on these consoles is pretty much immaterial , you can switch out the hard drive in a couple of minutes , its a piece of cake.

I think people are just using the hard drive size as a sort of a nickname for other features , for instance the 60GB had four USB ports , a card reader and so on , the 40GB had just 2 USB ports and no card reader and no PS2 chip etc.

If hard drive size is the most important thing your looking for , then buy the smallest model and get a hard drive off komplett or something , it'll work out way cheaper.

A 160GB drive off Komplett ( probably way cheaper elsewhere ) is only 70 euros.
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=339970

PS3 takes 2.5 inch 5400rpm serial ATA drives. It will automatically format on install.
Instructions on how to do the switch are in the manual for the PS3.

    http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/11/ps3-manual-details-hdd-battery-replacement/

And it doesnt void the warranty.

Why? The PS3 upscales the PS2 games and makes some of them look much nicer. IMO, of course.

I never felt the need to do it. I use the HDTV for the PS3 and PC only.

I'm lost now. If you turn on upscaling on the PS3, play it on a HD TV and put in a PS2 game, it will look better. Sorry, I'm probably having a 30watt moment - you don't play PS2 games any more?

I would rather not have such an expensive paper weight, thanks.
When they get their reliability sorted I might get one.

PS3 has BluRay, sealed the deal for me when it became the cheapest player around and upgradable

I do play PS2 games but on a PS2 connected to a SD television.

Why do you have to bring fanboy-ism into this thread. The OP never said they wanted a 360. I'm sure if they had they would have mentioned it somewhere, such as in the thread title/post or the XBox forum.

hi i read it on digitalspy.co.uk that the magazine t3 had it that the sony were introducing a slimmer version with a bigger hard drive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 550 ✭✭✭DePurpereWolf

That slimmer version is not going to come in a long while. Wouldn't wait for it.

But with IBM reducing the node to like 46nm or something, the newer chips will be much cooler and you can get a slimmer design. But this will be more of a PS4, or PS3.5, however, the introduction will not happen for 2 years at least.
