Itunes will not recognise my itouch. I'm running a desktop pc with (not legit) xp, the pc is clean, no virii or spyware (regular checks). when i connect the ipod, i tunes says:

Itunes could not connect to the IPHONE because an unknown error occourred

Then a number ending in 01

    To combat this i have:

Uninstalled and reinstalled itunes (latest version)
Connected the ipod in restore mode (held down power button and multi function button, this makes itunes detect the ipod and attempt to restore it, but the restoration always fails)
Tried my ipod on my wifes laptop, which it works fine with, registered the ipod and updated the software to the latest version
Called apple who told me that because the problem is with itunes, to email them at the site www.apple.com/itunes/feedback for a solution, but the page doesent exist!!!

I have no idea why its not working, is itunes corrupt?? have i corrupt registery??

    HELP!!!!!!

i've never had this i'm afraid but after a quick search i came across this, it might be of help to you but honestly i don't know what the problem is:

First some background. If you plug in your ipod BEFORE installing itunes windows doesnt have any drivers to match with it, so it makes a best guess as to what to use. iPods before the touch allowed disc access similar to the way most digital cameras allow you to access the memory card as a drive. So windows thinks it is being helpful and installing the driver that will at least give you disk access. once that happens that is the driver windows will use until you tell it specifically to use a better one. This is where the solution comes in.

(this was done on vista, though the same principals should apply on xp)
    1) open device manager, either by right clicking on computer, and then clicking manage, and then finally on device manager, or by typing
devmgmt.msc in the search (or run) box on the bottom of the start menu and hitting enter.

    2) find the ipod, it (should) be listed under digital cameras (or something to that effect), right click it and choose "update driver software"

    3) choose "browse my computer for driver software"

    4) for the location (you must have itunes already installed) use C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers (substitute C: for whatever your system drive letter is) and click next, windows should find the CORRECT driver in that location and proceed to update the driver

    5) after the update is complete click finish to close the dialog box, then unplug the ipod and plug it back in. itunes should now recognize the ipod.

As a side note... if you cant find the drivers anywhere on your system, you can extract them from the installer by doing the following

    1) run the downloaded installer and wait for it to get to the welcome page (or if itunes is already installed, it will ask if you want to repair or remove) DO NOT click anything at this point

    2) open windows explorer and go to your temp directory, on vista its usually C:\usersYOUR_PROFILE_NAME\AppData\Temp, in that directory look for something resembling IXP154.TMP and open the folder. The name may vary, but keep opening folders until you find a folder with files that say iTunes, Bonjour, AppleMobileDevicesupport, and a few other files.

    2) once you find the folder copy the file AppleMobileDeviceSupport to a place where you can easily find it. Ill use C:\ as an example, after you copy that file you can click cancel on the installer to exit it. You DO NOT need to remove, install, or repair it.

    3) now all you need to do is extract the drivers from the package, to do that simply open a command window (type cmd in the search box and hit enter), and change to the directory that you put the AppleMobileDeviceSupport file in. Next, use the following command (of course replacing C:\applemobiledevicesupport.msi with the path you copied the file to earlier, do not change the MSI extension):

    msiexec /a C:\applemobiledevicesupport.msi /qb TARGETDIR=C:\ipoddriver

and hit enter. Windows installer will work for a second
and then it should create a folder in C:\ called ipoddriver with the driver files in it, and then simply use the steps above to update the default windows driver to the correct driver.

    Hope this helps.

why dont you install itunes on your wifes laptop and use that to sync when necessary?

Because my entire music library (17 gb +) is on my desktop. While itunes does allow you to share libraries across a wireless network (allowing me to listen to my songs on her laptop) it does not allow me to synch across that network

...as far as i'm aware? maybe some itunes expert can correct me?

copying all the songs i want over to her laptop then syncing sounds like too much hassle to me.

since it's only new it will still be under warrenty so you could send it to Apple or ask for a replacment. Bring it in to an o2 store and see what they say. Sorry i'm not much more help

Are you using a USB hub?

thing is, the ipod is fine, as i mentioned before, it works with my wifes laptop. and i'm plugged into a usb pci card.

I have got this error before with my touch. It doesn't work in some USB ports on my PC (Power related I assume)

Have you tried different USB ports? Not ones on a PCI card

i've tried every usb port on my pc. zilch. if a windows reinstall doesnt fix this then its up for sale. pity really as i love it...

Ipods dont like VIA pci cards, had exact same issiue with older pc and my Via USB PCI card! , fortunately the internal USB 1.1 ports worked fine with it, do your case ones work, if not theres a problem, I heard belkin PCI cards should work with ipod but cant guarantee this, been years since running into this issiue!

open up itunes on your PC and go into file and back up all your music to disc (may take several discs).

then download ituns on the laptop and open, insert the back up cd and itunes will ask you if you want to restore from the disc. that way, keeping all of your music.

Try using the other on board ports, My ipod says only usb 2.0 compatable but worked fine with USB 1.1, slower of course, try it from other ports rather than PCI card
