Broken laptop - well, kinda...

    Hi all,

Last week I came in pissed one night and decided to do a spot of Google-chatting (as you do at 4am). I idiotically dropped my laptop on the floor
Anyhoo, it wouldn't switch on, but as soon as I plugged the charger in and pressed the power switch it was working perfectly. And that's pretty much it since then. It won't work... but it will when the charger is plugged in. And there's plenty of battery power at this stage.
Any idea what dropping it could have done, and what would need to be done to correct the problem? AND costs etc? I'm at your tech-head mercy...

It's a Dell Inspiron by the way.

tough to know: double check the connection to the battery, try taking it out and putting it in again.
If you have a friend with the same battery, borrow it to see if it works

Turn the laptop on with the battery plugged in , press F2 to get in to the Dell Bios, check the battery status page of the bios and see is it discharging , idle , charging etc. Just want to see whether the battery is not being recognised after the drop. If thats the case well I dunno if theres much that can be done, you say the battery still has a charge (from the led indicator on the battery itself I assume) so replacing the battery probably wont do anything. Tricky situation but let us know what the bios page says. (what inspiron model too)
