http://www.rte.ie/business/2008/0201/jobless.html, from this article in rte ireland has a rate of unemployment of about 5% which accounts for about 180,000 people.

with a total population of about 4 million that would mean the workforce in ireland is 3.6 million surely there are more than 400,000 people below working age in ireland, here in florida the rate is about 5% too but seems like there is a lot more people out of work than that. just wondering if there are more acuarate figures for people looking for work who cant find it

Been in the USA for a couple of years and they claim someplace around 5 percent unemployment. Discovered that this figure is greatly understated, as they do not count people who have exceeded their unemployment benefits. After a few weeks you drop off and essentially disappear from the rolls. Homeless people are also not reported, and you would be surprised how many they have in the major metropolitan areas.

There are lots more people here out of work.
What happened was a few years back they got moved to other Social Welfare payments such as Disability Allowance or Lone Parents and this disguises the true numbers out of work.
