MBA For Consultant Spot?

I know this guy, a second year SHO, who's doing (what I think) is the done thing of taking two years out to do research before applying for a surgical reg spot. As far as I know, that's what most people do.

Now, this guy is very ambitious, always has been, and he's determined to get to a consultant spot as fast as he can. To help with this, he's doing an MBA part time as well as doing research! This is the first time I heard of anyone doing an MBA along the road to consultant, and I was wondering if anyone else has heard of people doing this? Do you think it'll benefit him?

If they're hiring 2000 new consultants over the new few years he might be well going straight through his training and trying to pick up one of those!

Anyway, what was his logic on how an MBA would help him?

I've heard of one or two people doing MBAs int he UK, enroute to reg/consultant posts.

I think the rationale is that you. as the consultant, are often helping control a large budget, aswell as having responsibility for a lot of employees. So, in many ways, you're as much of manager as a doctor.
