My Dad needs to get a car NCT'd which has been off the road since September.

How can he get it to test centre?? Does he need to change over his insurance and get car taxed??

    Any help appreciated,

    Kev

If its not registered to him he can drive it on a FC policy if he has one.

You can get it taxed fairly handy without the NCT and by putting in any policy no. on the tax renewal form;)

I think he's right about the trailer. Only other option transfer his insurance for the day and take a chance that he won 't be stopped and done for no tax.

I think if he has the booking refernce printed out for the test that it would be hard lines for a cop to do him.. transfer the ins, tis the easiest option

You don't need to give an insurance policy to tax a car.

Just transfer the insurance policy and bring a print out of the NCT booking as slideways said. It would be very bad form on the part of a garda to do you over the tax if its obvious your on the way to NCT the car

Tow it there. Cheapest anyway. Be sure to get the engine well warmed up before the test though.

You may not need to show it, but you need to give the details.

I taxed my car on line and they asked for policy number and insurance company name

Just dug out a motor tax renewal form that I was going to use at the tax office, section 4 asks for insurance company name (NOT broker), insurance policy number and expiry date of policy.

I taxed my car yesterday and didn't bother filling out that bit of the form. Guess what? They were delighted with my cheque for €530!

I don't think having insurance is a legal requirment for taxing a car, 90% sure of that. I'll confirm one way or the other monday though.

They may ask for it, but why on earth give them the info unless you have to!

You technically cannot tax a car without a valid certificate of Insurance. You can do the NCT wihout having tax but not the other way around. You dont need Insurance for NCT but dont get caught driving up to the NCT test center without it. safest way is to get a mate with a garage policy or someone who is covered to drive it and get the NCT to fax you an appointment form if the car hasn't been taxed for a while.

Technicality or not you need two things to tax a car
    1) Form RF100
    2) Money

Legislation or not they don't care about the Insurance or NCT!

So, is it Monday already? Or maybe the person who processed your application which apparently did not contain insurance details did not notice your omission? Do you not also need a VRC/tax book (or if online, a PIN which confirms you are the registered owner)?

I used to sell a few cars and used to tax them before selling as a little incentive to buyers.
I used to write fictional policy numbers and then started leaving them blank and explaining if required why it was not insured, nobody ever questioned the blank insurance section.

Get somebody who's own insurance policy covers them to drive another car, drive it up, get tested and fail.....only joking, best of luck, hope it passes.

    Mines in today

    EDIT:

Man!, just realised this post was written when dinosaurs were still about.
