I'd say 20 is the average age. It'd usually range from 18 - 22, but I know a guy who did one last year when he was 28 (mature student, obviously). He didn't like it that much though. He did it on his own and I think he found it quite lonely. However, loads of people do it alone every year, and they make plenty of friends. Just don't go somewhere like San Diego.

I did it on my own last year I made a load of American friends. Never met 1 Irish person while I was there I was 21 and I'm going again this year (final year student).
