I'm not sure what part of the salery scale thread you find confusing. It's simply common salary scale plus allowances for academic qualifications. The max a teacher can earn is obviously the max on the common salary scale plus academic allownaces. The answer to the question you ask, if I recall correctly what people have written here, is that a Hibernia graduate starts on point 3 of the scale.

The holidays are along the lines of what you say, I believe, but if the length of Easter holidays is a critical factor in your decision-making it'd probably be best to check with the Dept of Education or ask someone in your local school.

the common salary scale allows you to start on point 2 of the scale with 3 years education at third level and point 3 with 4 years education at third level. So a teacher with a degree and teaching qualification usually starts on point 3.

For each year you are teaching you go up a point on the scale, so as trotter was saying, it takes a long time to reach the top of the scale.

(are primary teachers paid the same as secondary? - i don't know, I'm a secondary teacher, I would assume it's similar for primary)

Standard holidays: Secondary - 2 weeks at easter and christmas, june, july, august, a week in october and a week in february

Primary - easter and christmas should be the same, july and august for summer, a week in october and a short midterm in february.

I think that's what primary gets but i'm open to correction.

To put 60k in perspective, the average industrial wage I believe is 30k, so it takes a long time to get there but you could be doing worse jobs. The holidays aren't the be all and end all either.
