Don't know if this has been asked before. Can anyone clarify if there is a fixed way to number houses on a street/estate. I'm thinking particularly on what side should the numbers start - should No.1 be on left or right, shoul numbers follow sequentially or criss - cross the road.

Each local authority may or may not issue guidelines.

There are no hard and fast rules.
Separating odds and evens to either side of a street is common. This often results in missed numbers, were that are uneven amounts of each side.

As for left or right, it would depend on which way you are facing on the road, it can be reletive

On our street when we were kids, the left side was even and the right side was odd. Even went from 2-32 and odd went from 1-29. No 31???

Currently the street I live in now is a right mash. Starts at 19 on the way right side only in and goes to 16, then rounds a 90 deg bend and its 15-4, then starts on the other side from 3 down to 1, but #1 is semi detached to #19 on the next street.

    The mind boggles
