Anybody any experience of running an SMS campaign, part from bars and nightclubs is there a use for this type of marketing? I wonder if there is a statistical response in the same way as Mailshots etc.

    any feedback welcome.

In general – the response rates are higher for SMS. Most people will read the text – and a few reply.

HOWEVER – data protection – you have to make sure that the recipients of the SMS have given permission/authority for you to text them.

If you don’t –m it really annoys the recipient and, more importantly, it breeches the Data protection rules - serious fine of that

Firstly, for clarity purposes I should point out that I would in the Mobile Marketing industry.

isthatyoudave? are you planning on doing an outbound SMS campaign or an inbound lead generation type campaign?

If it is out bound you will have to think about a number of things:
    • Have they all the recipients opted in to receive messages from you.
    • How up to date is the contact database, you have 12 months within which to contact your opt in DB.
    • Will you be sending relevant information that would be of interest to them.
    • What are you trying to achieve through this activity.

If it is an inbound campaign you will also need to think of a few things:
    • How are you going to promote the campaign
    • Is the offer compelling enough to encourage people to text in
    • What are you going to do with the information once received.
    • What are you trying to achieve through this activity.

The most important thing you will need to think about is the offer, in all cases it needs to be compelling enough to attract the attention of your target audience.

Mobile marketing has great success if properly applied and the total opposite if not fully though through.

If you give me a bit more info on what you are looking to achieve i can give you a bit more advice.

there are loads of applications for it, a few of the casinos I'm a member of regularly send me updates and reminders of the tournaments they are holding, I've seen soem companies start to text discount vouchers for retail stores, I've used it as a reminder service for some of the exhibitions we hold which can carry sponsored adverts, and i'm in the process of setting up a subscription based gambling tips service using sms (based on a new "network" software for mobile messaging).

    Growler, cyberspider,

I am contemplating building some software to manage a local community group, so mass sms alerts can be sent out from a website. I know this is slightly off topic, but do you know any web services or software I can use to send bulk sms, also are they any network providers which provide a bulk sms service?

    Thanks
    Higgs

Loads of software and companies can provide that service for you.
try www.phonovation.com - they have an aplication (but i think its expensive).

I used one a few years ago that sent text via Outlook express (cant remember much more)

to get a bulk SMS account you need to go to an aggregator, that work into someone that has an SMSC connection into the mobile operators

just out of curiosity how big is the community group

I have just set up a mobile marketing company and could facilitate this request if it stacked up commercially

PM if you want more info

isthatdave?... there are a broad range of uses for SMS marketing & mobile is proven to be one of the most effective delivery mechanisms with much higher than average penetration rates..

mobile internet is actually a more effective method again and triggered by an SMS recently the Snickers Ireland mobile campaign generated in excess of 10% response rates

.. according to Puca a campaign they ran with Peugot Ireland recently generated in excess of 40% take up
