Any ideas why an engineer said that its better to plug the amp straight into the output of a speaker?

Its a power mixer, when it was bought and set up, the guy put the speakon cable to output!?

OK, we'll need more details. Are we talking about guitar amps, bass amps, a PA? What speakers? What power mixer?

a powered mixer is a mixing desk, eq, amp etc all built into one unit! essentially its a PA system!

The speakers are passive PA 12''

So you're interchanging the terms power mixer and amp in your post?

Now then, what do you mean by the "output" of a speaker because the output of a speaker unit is the speaker cone itself. Can you elaborate a bit more?

Thats what they are called and thats what they are! check it out http://www.musicstore.de/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/MusicStore-MusicStoreShop-Site/en_EN/-/EUR/ViewProductDetail-Start;pgid=?SKU=PAH0006694-000&ProductUUID=0&JumpTo=OfferList

If you look to the back of most PA speaker you will see 2 speakon connections, one is input (usually from the amp) and the other is output (usually connected to mulitple speakers) Im wondering why the engineer told these people to plug the cable from the power mixer to the output connection. Its got nothing to do with anyting but cables and jacks.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Output is usually Parallel for daisy chaining a 2nd or subsequent speaker. Depending on how the speaker is internally wired, some can carry thru a signal on the 2+- pins of the speakon cable so that there are 2 separate amp signals running along one speakon cable. 1+- powers the first speaker and 2+- powers the second.

I don't see any need for this config in a powered desk setup, just plug it in and turn it on. That's if I'm understanding your roundabout worded post correctly.

Passive speakers don't actually have "output" connections - the second connection is really just a parallel input, in which case it would make absolutely no difference which connection you plug into.

Unless it's a speakon and a jack or something like that and he was basically telling you to use the speakon connections rather than the jacks?

Otherwise, no, no idea why he would have said that. Either he was crazy or there's unusual circumstances that you haven't stated or aren't aware of.

The amp is a stage in an integrated mixer - he wasn't using the terms interchangeably. If you want to be semantic, you could have picked on the fact that they're actually called powered mixers. :P

Actually I think "powermixer" is another one of those german phrases that got lost in translation somewhere, like "aktiv loudspeaker". It's probably to be expected that some lingo gets misunderstood considering the number of people using German stores for gear.

Probably. But that doesn't make it right! :)
