Is it possible to get fixed price contracts [Dublin] from contractors or is that old fashioned ?

A neighbour of mine - very inexperienced in dealing with trades - got some building work done totalling around €25,000 finally. She was stupid enough not to get a written estimate on foot of a verbal indication of around €20,000 and got taken for a right gallop.

Very possible and very necessary. If the builder wont give you a written quotation then get someone else. You would also be well advised to get a contract also - there is thread in the last couple of days about that if you have a look at the main page.
