Rendered full-fill walls, how weatherproof?

    Hi All,
Wondering about how rain resistent modern renders are, if you don't have a cavity to stop water ingress. I'm thinking of using AAC blocks for an extension, but am worried about the kind of driving rain that we have gotten over the last few days.
Does anyone know if a good render is enough to keep your walls dry, or is a cavity the only sure way?
    Thanks,
    d2ww

A cavity wall is certainly your best bet but then again its down to the workmanship.

The likes of Weber use terms like "a reliable solution for harsh or exposed conditions" and "highly water repellant" but who knows what "reliable" means in this context.
As I want to use the 480mm solid AAC, if I added a cavity and outer leaf, the overall thickness would just get ridiculous.
I know that Greenspan's render has an IAB cert where it says "due to the water repellant additive in the product mix, Repois R prevents water reaching the substrate during rain" So I suppose once you have the right water repellant additive and enough thickness, it should work.......I hope.

You can't use full fill with brick, you can't use full fill on unrendered block - so you're relying on the render for protection. The previlance of wind driven rain is going to be an even bigger factor in the comming years as result of climate change - it's taking a big chance.

d2ww - that's interesting about the 480mm AAC block - what's your reason for this spec?

I like the idea of using something new, they seem to be much easier and quicker to build with, being so lightweight and inherently insulating. If I could find a suitable stone slip that actually looks like a stone wall that would be perfect. The likes of Tessela, will I presume do a good job of keeping out the rain, but look very bitty. The individual stones tend to be only 30-40mm high at most. If anyone out there knows of a more natural looking product, please let me know.
