I've been pleasantly surprised by my kids with a weeks holiday in Portugal (Villamoura)(and I do deserve it:rolleyes:). We're off tomorrow and I know theres a casino there, but I was wondering if any Boardie knows if holdem is played there? I can find out when I get there but if anyone knows already, the info would be handy.

    Cheers---Connie

PS: The only downside to this is I'm missing GJP's festival. Hope its a big success .

A Portuguese friend informed me that here is no live poker in Portugal except for very rare special tournaments. I'm pretty sure there are no cash games or holdem games of any kind in casinos.

no the casino had no poker when I was there in 2005...

Great place btw would love to go back..

As far as I know poker is not allowed in Portugal.

Luckylucky lives there and plays an online pro so might be worth asking him as mentioned..

I'll also ask another guy from portugal and reply

Remember Connie, its a holiday. Poker does not have to be played.
You could try sailing or fishing. Or some other wholesome outdoor activity.

I was in portugal a couple of weeks ago and asked at the local casino if they had poker. They said they had games in the evening. That was in Monte Gordo about an hour from Vilamoura but part of the same group so u might be in luck.

    Hi Connie,

    I hope that u'll enjoy Vilamoura :)

About poker, it's only allowed at casinos, and the cash game is open all days from 9:00pm to 3:00am at Lisbon (Casino do Estoril) and Oporto (Casino de Espinho). The stackes are from NL500 up to NL1000. Unfortunatelly at Casino Vilamoura doesn't have open tables, due there's not people to play. but on Tournament Events, there will be the next scheduled at 4th April, at Casino Vilamoura, with 110€ buy-in , 50€ for one rebuy and 50€ for one add-on, and between 4th to 6th april there will be cash tables at Casino Vilamoura NL500.
There will be other events at other dates, so take a look on this page: http://pokerpt.com/solverdeseason2008.html.

I hope that it will be helpul.

    Have a nice holidays.

    Jomil

Indoor activities suit me much better Eoghan.I used to run marathons but anytime I reached the "wall",I wasn't tall enough to climb over it. So methinks I'll stick with the indoor stuff.

the closest casino from Vilamoura with Cash Game is at Casino Estoril (Lisbon) and it's 300km and to Espinho is 550km from Vilamoura.

Hey Connie, if you locate the Clube de Golfe hotel, just 3 mins or so from the Casino, you'll probably find loads of Irish golfers over (main golf travel agent always uses that hotel). Any time I was there, there was always a game going on in the lobby .... not your casino setting, but might address your need for a fix anyway.

    Nice spot Villamoura !

Yep, nice spot for a break. Thanks for the info but I'm afraid I'm so used to dealer dealt games,I wouldnt enjoy a self deal one. I can go a week without a game though(I think). Shame really,as all the family play and it would have been a bit of fun.
Still,I'll do my best to enjoy myself anyway:)

Soz just saw this now, was away for a couple of days. Yes I live in Portugal, tbh I know very little vis-a-vis live poker anywhere. I'm almost totally an internet player. I haven't played live poker in Portugal at all. I am pretty sure that the casino in Estoril (near Lisbon) does have poker, not sure about other casinos. Anyways sure you've probably found out now whether they have live poker or not at this stage, anyway gotta dash out again.

    Bem vindo a Portugal. :D

Just back in now, been a fairly hectic few days for me, have managed to read the whole thread now. Poker isn't really big in Portugal at all. I reckon per head of population it probably has the lowest amount of players anywhere in the EU. It's not that Portugese are particularly averse the gambling afaik, it's more like they have their own games and it's a fairly traditional type of society here.

Anyway hope you enjoy your stay here Connie (with or without Poker ;)).

btw anyone considering a holiday in Portugal and interested in getting in some Poker maybe should look around Cascais/Estoril about 20 km west of Lisbon. It's the exclusive area of Portugal where the celebs and footballers have pads. Very scenic area near the coast. So in a way you have the best of everything, you have the nearby big city, beaches, hot weather and of course poker(I think). Portugal isn't just about the Algarve ;)
