Moving to Ireland...

Hullo everyone! I am a newbie here but have been reading the posts for a bit now....
I am trying to move to Ireland within the next couple months and wanted to know if you fantastic people had any tips..
I know its expensive there. I compare it to living in Cali tho which was super pricey for everything from gas to childcare.
I do have 3 kiddos who will thankfully all be in school come september.
My main questions are about getting a job and a rental. I have about 5 years of customer service/call center experience and I do know there are a great deal of call centers throughout Ireland. The mister has experience in all sorts of things... from commercial fishing to housepainting to chimney sweeping. He will do anything.
The rental thing seems a lil more complicated just because I dont know yet where we will be working. We were looking at Balbriggan tho cuz it seems nice and not too bad of a commute into Dub.
By the way I was born abroad to an Irish parent so I am already a citizen and should have my passport in a few weeks.
Also I am planning a trip over at the end of Feb to look for a job and have been sending out my CV to tons of recruitment angencies..
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

For rentals have a look at www.daft.ie/lettings. Probably most popular property site in Ireland and is well designed and easy to use.
Ballbriggan is fair bit from the city centre, places like Clontarf, Raheny on are much closer and are nice places to live but as with everything that means it will cost a bit more.
Its true that we seem to have a lot of call centres here but from talking to friends who worked in some, they are not particularly well paid. Maybe with your experience you may be looking for more management type role though.

Have you considered living outside Dublin? Places like Galway/Mayo are really nice to live in and have numerous call centre type jobs available. Your money would also stretch a lot further there, especially if you are looking for a family home.

Ya was just going to say there's more to Ireland than dublin, and places like Mayo do give you more open spaces and the like! :) We used to live in Kilkenny and the kids much prefer it up here

    Hi Supermommy

I think you'll be happy with your decision to move to Ireland. It's nice here :)

As jackbhoy said, daft.ie is the best place to look for places to rent. You should also look at loadza.com under the homes section.

Regarding recruitment, there are many options. A website I own, dole.ie, will allow you search lots of different jobsites at once. It's pretty handy :) I would also recommend jobs.ie as they have a mix of "serious" and not-so-serious jobs.

You'll have no problem finding a job. Your husband, with his lack of credentials for working in the EU... that won't be so easy. In general, you need a skill (such as software development) to get a work permit for a job in Ireland. So bear this in mind.

    It'll work out though. :)

    Hey guys..
    thanks for yer advice..
I really am open to living anywhere in Ireland. I have family in Wexford but didnt see that as a great job option. I looked into Galway and tho the rents were nice and low I didnt see as many call center jobs. Limerick also seemed ok tho I have heard a fair bit about it being 'stab city' lol I do have some friends that live there that say its not bad tho.
I think it might be a bit easier when I am am actually there job hunting. It is very frustrating and hard to get info online.

dublindude- I was told by the embassy that as soon as we get there.. that the mister has to go and get permission to stay in Ireland and as soon as he does that he will have full permission to work just like a proper citizen. I did kinda plan on myself getting a full time job and possibly a part time job as well so he could take some time off tho.

You guys are super.. thanks alot!
I hope Im not seen as another silly american with fanciful dreams of moving there. This is something I have been plotting for a couple years now.
    Cheers!

Limerick isn't so bad. Sure as an American you may know that a lot of people consider Detroit to be crime central and a very run down city (see film 8 Mile).
But that's a media perception, maybe it's not so bad.
Parts of Limerick are rough but parts of every town or city are rough.

I think you should look outside Dubin. Less traffic and less hassle though possibly lower wages. Try Galway, it's great.

supermommy silly American? no!!! He should have no problem since you're a citizen, pretty handy for you both. CHekc out kilkenny for call centre jobs too...though the best you can do is search on all the job sites to see what's out there. You should also consider receptioninst work if you've a head for dealing with lots of calls in and out

    Hi
I am dave from Birmingham in the UK, Myself and my girlfriend are also looking to move back to ireland, I am a field engineer in the computer engineer, I have been looking at all the job websites, And have noticed that Dublin, Galway, Cork, Waterford. Or the main area's for I.T. jobs. We want to move to the middle of ireland, Roscommon or around there. I would rather earn less money, And have a slower pace of life, Plus house prices are cheaper.
Try www.google.ie and put your searches in to what you want, This website will tell you about the tax system in ireland http://www.revenue.ie/ .
Also have a look at this website it has some good info on it, http://www.irishlinks.co.uk/
So I hope this helps you,

    dave

Brilliant! So it's should be a fairly smooth beginning in Ireland.

I'd be interested to get an update on your situation in a few months, i.e. how hard/easy was it to find a place to live, to work, etc.

Thanks you guys for yer advice! It is super appreciated!

jenny-walsh- I will consider any kind of office work really. Im actually not above too many jobs in fairness. With 3 rapidly growing boys to feed I cant be too picky!

dublindude- Im excited and scared all at once to see what happens with the move. Sometimes I get so scared that it wont work out that I almost convince myself that it is insane to even try. But I am determined and it helps that I am living in a state I cannot stand! (utah-meh!)

I am booking my trip in a couple weeks to go over and look for work. Im pretty nervous about job interviews over there. I assume they are somewhat similar to the ones here but I guess its the fear of the unknown. I am expecting loads of questions about why I wanna move n such.

I reckon only time will tell!

    Woot wooooooooooot!
I got a job. Was actually quite easy in fairness..
We are thinking the move date will be the beginning of June. When my kids are done with school and such.
Next on the agenda is finding a home from here. I will be working in PayPal in Blanchardstown so now I am looking for a rental on the bus line...
    Gigitty!

Congrats! Hope you have an easy move!

I presume you're looking at daft.ie for accomodation? It really is the best place.

    Thanks!
Yup. I have been looking at daft.ie for months now. It is just hard trying to sort out where the city busses go and such. Also hard getting people to work with you from the states. I reckon when we are closer to moving with cash in hand we wont have too many issues finding a place.
I really want somewhere decent for my kiddos..
    :)

Ended up falling into a lovely rental in Limerick. So far its been grand!
Just need to sort out jobs now :o

Good stuff. How come not Dublin if you don't mind my asking?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 140 ✭✭supermommy

Well we had a really hard time getting anyone to even give us info on rentals in Dublin. I think they wanted the people there to meet n whatnot before renting, which makes sense.
It worked out that a good mate of mine had this house for rent in Limerick at an awesome price so we decided it was better to be in Limerick than still stuck in the states.
So here we are. The house is awesome! We are close to everything we need, 3 minute walk to the bus stop, shops are super close...etc.. The traffic is a sight better than what I saw in Dublin and I really think I might be able to drive here!! Ha!
The neighborhood is super quiet and in a lovely area.. We have only agreed to rent it for 3 months or so but so far its freakin great here! It sucks that the job I wanted is in Dublin tho...ah well.. I should be able to find something suitable here..
I like being able to look out my windows and see the hills in Co. Clare as well!
    :p

Come to Cork! Apple is here and has similar jobs to Paypal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 140 ✭✭supermommy

Ah well Im already partially sorted out here in Limerick. I reckoned if the job thing is not lookin so great we could spend the time here looking for a place in Dublin. As I already have a job there as well as some great friends..
So far I am enjoying Limerick tho.
Ive heard some great things about Cork tho, Ill definately find my way there to at least check it out someday soon I reckon..
    :p
