    Hi

I am currently studying Business Information Systems in England. I am hoping to do either the PGCE or H.dip in ICT secondary teaching. I know that currently computing/ICT isnt on the Irish curriculum in secondary schools. but I am hoping that eventually it will become a mandatory/optional subject. Does anyone know of plans for this?
If I decide to do the PGCE un the UK I will probably end up staying here and working untill such time as there is more job availability in Ireland.

From what I can gather the teaching council will only allow me to teach IT in ireland. Does anyone else have any experiences in a similar situation to me??

There is an optional IT specialism in the LCA.

spurious is correct re the specialism in lca
it amounts to 4 class periods per week, 2 lca classes per school, about 280 minutes work,

the biggest problem with schools trying to offer ict as a specialism is access to computers

my advice would be to have another subject, tefl can be picked up, this would allow you teach international students english. look into teaching CSPE, with a bis, you have skills to teach business subjects, certainly the portfolio part of the lcvp link modules and you should be able to teach the theory parts as well, another 6 class periods per week

    best of luck

And by the way, NCCA has no plans to introduce ICT as a subject in its own right. The policy is that ICT should be integrated across the curriculum, and that creating a standalone subject would militate against that. As the syllabuses in various subjects are reviewed, each is supposed to take on board ICT skills and applications relevant to the subject.

I'm not arguing in favour or against this policy; just saying don't hold your breath.

Some schools also offer Post Leaving Certificate courses where many of the modules are IT. I teach Spreadsheets, Database, Word Processing and Internet as 4 of the subjects on my timetable, so if you only have IT as your qualification maybe you should be looking to schools with large PLC centres or Colleges of Futher Education which teach these courses. Your subjects would be much more in demand there
